Biography

Born: 19 Jun 1642 and christened 19 Jun 1642 in Windsor, Hartford County, Connecticut. Hannah Griswold was the daughter of Edward Griswold and Margaret Blencow. Note

[Theurer gives 19 June as date of birth: all his dates may be Christening dates.] Marriage: 19 Nov 1663 at Windsor, Hartford, Connecticut [1] [2] Death 3 May 1714 Simsbury Center, Hartford, Connecticut.[1][2] [3] Will: Dated 1 Aug 1713, proved 7 Jun 1714. [4] Burial 21 May 1714 Windsor, Hartford, Conn. She married Jonah Westover Nov 19, 1663 in Windsor, Hartford Co, CT. The names Hannah and Anna are often confused. As a result the proof that Hannah wife of Jonah Westover, and Anna daughter of Edward Griswold baptized in Windsor, are the same, is lacking. However, there doesn't appear to be another Anna or Hannah Griswold who could be the wife of Jonas Westover,[5] and the Westovers did move to Killingworth at the same time as Edward and other members of the family. Book - Vol.II Edward Griswold, p.23 -Anna, Hannah, Griswold, bapt. June 19, 1642 (Edward)

While at present we have no direct proof that the following record is correct, circumstances and the records thus far assembled, would tend to show the almost certian proof. Search has not revealed the birth of any Hannah Griswold who could have been the wife of Jonas Westover. In view of the fact that Anna and Hannah were easily, and were very frequently confounded in the records, usualy by mistake in the sound of the name, it has been thought that the only person possible would be Ann or Anna, daughter of Edward. Hence all the records that have been found are placed here.

She married in Windsor, CT; Nov 19, 1663, Jonas Westover, son of John, who died in Simsbury Jan 15, 1708/9, farmer. Removed to Killingworth with Edward Griswold and Samuel Buell. Made freeman of Windso 1658; or Killingworth 1669. Took his home lot next to Samuel Buell and near that of Edward. Members of the first church in Killingworth. Children recorded, first in Windsor, the others in Killingworth.

There were others recorded in Simsbury, where he evidently resided later in life:

  1. Jonas, born 20 Sep 1664
  2. Margaret, born 19 Feb 1666
  3. Hannah, born 8 Apr 1668; married Joseph Alvord
  4. Elizabeth, b orn 3 May 1670
  5. Jane, born 26 Mar 1672; married _____ Byington
  6. Sarah, born ____, died 15 Aug 1718
  7. Mary, born _____, married Samuel Chase
  8. Jonathan
  9. Joanna, b. ______, married Stephen Wilton

Jonas married Hannah Griswold in 1663. Hannah was born in Windsor 19 Aug 1642, daughter of Edward and Margaret Griswold, a prominent family in Windsor, Connecticut. After the birth of their first child they moved souhward to a new settlement called Killingworth. There they lived fro about eleven years and then moved back to Simsbury (1675). Jonas and his family had been active members of the established First Church of Killingworth.
