Biography

Ann was a Friend (Quaker)
Ann was born into a Quaker family. She migrated from Dover, New Hampshire to Nantucket Island where she married Paul Starbuck. They had nine children. She died at the age of thirty-nine.

Early Life

Ann was the second child and first daughter of Ephraim Tibbetts and Rose Austin born July 8, 1697 in Dover, Strafford, New Hampshire.[1][2][3]

Ann's family were Quakers. Her father Ephraim was a farmer and a blacksmith. She had four brothers and four sisters, named Ephraim, Jr., Henry, Abigail, Joseph, Aaron, Mary, Rose and Elizabeth.[4]

New England 1685
The punishment for a Quaker to set foot in Massachusetts in 1660 was death by hanging. After the the English monarchy was restored in 1662, the king sent a letter to Massachusetts ordering him to stop the Quaker persecution.[5]

While the early settlers of Nantucket were not Quakers they were "in close sympathy with Friends and were, at heart, in intimate accord with their message...The settlement was composed of persons of liberal spirit and it grew rapidly." Her great great grandfather Edward Starbuck moved his family to Nantucket Island in 1659 where they eventually became Friends.[6] Ann and her husband Paul were second cousins once removed through her maternal great grandmother Sarah Starbuck who was the daughter of Edward Starbuck and Katherine Reynolds. Paul's great grandparents were Edward Starbuck and Katherine Reynolds.[7][4]

Sometime before 1718 Ann removed from Dover, New Hampshire to Nantucket Island, Massachusetts.[8]

Family

Ann married Paul Starbuck in Nantucket on November 26, 1718.[8]

Sherburne, Nantucket Island.
The whaling industry in America originated on the island of Nantucket in the late 17th century, as colonists followed the example of the island's original American Indian inhabitants. Initial attempts were unsuccessful until Icabod Paddock of Cape Cod moved to Nantucket to serve as a whaling instructor in 1690. Nantucket acquired its first whaling sloop in 1694. The island possessed a total of 28 offshore whaling vessels by 1727 and began building its own ships in 1730. Nantucket's fleet continued to grow and dominate the whaling industry.[9]

Ann as well as many of the women of Nantucket, were responsible for the full management of their households during their husbands long absences at sea. Nantucket women transacted business as well as made frequent journeys to the mainland. [10] She was likely a very independent woman.

Life on the island centered around their Quaker faith. During the quarterly meetings, one of which fell annually at Nantucket, Friends from different parts of Massachusetts and New Bedford came and were received and welcomed whether strangers or not. There were also "Feasts" when a calf was killed in a Nantucket household and friends and neighbors gathered to share the good cheer.[10]

Ann and Paul had children all born on Nantucket Island[7]:

Edward b. 1719[11]
Hephzibah b. 1721[12]
Joseph b. 1723[13]
John b. 1725[14]
Samuel b. 1727[15]
Abigail b. 1728[16]
Elizabeth b. 1730[17]
Mary b. 1734[18]
Anna b. 1736[19]
Death

Ann died on July 29, 1736, likely from complications of childbirth considering Anna was born on July 22 just a week before her death.[20]
