There were so many John Williams living in the county at this time that it has resulted in much confusion. The John Williams living at the time of the death of John Whitley, Sr. who died 1670, with a daughter Ann was the John Williams who made his will on February 07, 1686 (probated May 1687), His legatees were: sons Hohn and Thomas, daughters Elizabeth, Ann, Sarah, to whom he left personality. ...

9 Apr 1694: Deed of Gift of Ann Williams, widow of John Williams, deceased, to her eldest son John Williams her Great Chest at her death and livestock; son William Williams livestock; son Thomas Williams household goods and livestock; daughter Mary Williams (under 18) household goods and livestock; son nicholas Williams (about 7 years old) household goods and livestock; son Richard Williams household goods and livestock; and daughter Jane Williams household goods and livestock. She mentions daughters Elizabeth Williams, Mary Williams and Jane Williams. Witnesses: Arthur Smith, Jr., John Craine & Arthur Smith. Recorded 21 May 1694.
Chapman's Isle of Wight County Marriages records the marriage of John Williams and (unknown, prob. Ann) Whitely, daughter of John Whitley in 1671. John Williams's will mentions a wife but does not give her name. The will of John Whitley mentions a granddaughter Anne but does not mention a daughter Anne. Chapman further recorded the marriage of Arnold Shumacke and Mrs. Ann Williams, relict of John Williams in 1694.
