About Anna Margaretha Baum

JOHAN THEOBALD 1 B AUM was born May 15, 1693 in Alsace, Lorraine, Germany1, and died August 27, 1762 in , Berks, Pennsylvania1. He married ANNA MARGARETH BLIMBOTT 1 November 07, 1719 in Evangelisch, Frankenthal, Pfalz, Bayern, Germany1. She was born 1695, and died 1761 in Berks, Pennsylvania1.

Notes for JOHAN THEOBALD BAUM :

It is not known when Theobald immigrated to Pennsylvania. The first record of him is found in a letter of reference dated 27 January 1731. Theobald's name appears on a Warrant for 250 acres of land in Philadelphia County in 1734. This land became part of Berks County when it was formed in 1752. Theobald's name, written as Dewalt Boom, is listed among the First Berks County Taxables from about 1752 in Alsace Township.

Theobald was naturalized in Philadelphia on 10 and 11 April 1741. He took the Sacrament on 4 February 1740 and his name was written Theowald Bawm, Philadelphia County.

The names of Dewald Baum and Jacob Spengler head the list of signatories on a petition responsible for the formation of Alsace Township. The petition was presented to the Philadelphia County Quarter Session Court on 2 December 1744. Those who signed the petition "represented that a sufficient quantity of land had been settled, that the inconvenience under which they had labored entitled them to erect a separate township, and that since the first settlers had come from a place called Elsas, in Germany, they desired that the new township should be called by that name. The petition was granted on 3 March 1745.

The first church in the neighborhood was built in 1737 on land donated by the Spangler and Baum families. Built of logs by the exiled Alsatian Protestants who settled there, the services were conducted in both French and German. It was a union of Lutheran and Reformed churches and because of the poverty prevailing in the congregation and the scarcity of regular pastors, wandering preachers were employed to conduct the services. In the church graveyard was found the grave of Theobald Baum. The following is the recorded inscription:

Here rests the body of a wise, peace loving Member,

his name

JOHAN THEOBALD BAUM

He was born May 15, 1693

He slept in peace August 27, 1762

Theobald's will was recorded at Reading, Berks County. Signed on 25 August 1761, the will was probated on 9 October 1762. He signed it by his mark which was probably due to illness or age since in other documents bearing his name the German signature is very plain handwriting.
