About Anna Dorothy Jorgensen

 Anna Dorthea Clemmensen Jorgensen

Birth: May 12, 1877 Sheffield Bureau County Illinois, USA Death: Mar. 3, 1963 Audubon Audubon County Iowa, USA

Audubon News Advocate March 14, 1963

Mrs. Anna Dorthea Jorgensen, 85, died March 3 at the Salem Invalid home, where she had been a patient for six years and seven months. She had been in failing health for a number of years.

She was born May 12, 1877 at Sheffield, Ill, the daughter of Jens Kjer and Christine Clemmensen and was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church. She moved to Elk Horn when a small girl and was married to Andrew Jorgensen June 26, 1895. They farmed in Audubon County and also lived in Elk Horn before moving to Audubon, where Mr. Jorgensen served as Audubon County sheriff. They were members of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Audubon.

Mr. Jorgensen died January 8, 1928. After her husband's death, Mrs. Jorgensen lived with a daughter until moving to the Salem home. She was a member of the Elk horn Lutheran Church.

Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Ed Hoeg of Elk Horn and Mrs. Oscar Boose of Audubon, eight grandchildren, a sister, Emma Jorgensen of Audubon and several other relatives. She was preceded in death by her parents, a son, Peter Jorgensen, two sisters and three brothers.

Funeral services were held March 6 from Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Audubon. Rev. Joel Jorgenson officiating and Rev. Eugene Wekander assisting. Burial was in the Maple Grove Cemetery at Audubon.

Following their marriage, Andrew and Anna had three children and farmed in various locations in western Iowa until 1916, when he moved to Audubon and started selling automobiles. He also managed a local baseball team. In 1920 Andrew ran for and was elected sheriff of Audubon County on the Republican ticket. The first sheriff to be elected for more than two terms he held this post for seven years. During his fourth term, however, Andrew had an appendicitis attack. He underwent emergency surgery, but peritonitis set in and two days later he died at age 52. Following his death the petite Anna, who was already responsible for feeding inmates since the family lived in the jail, served as sheriff for a short time and was given the nickname of "two-gun Annie." Later, her brother, Fred Clemmensen, Andrew's former deputy, assumed the position. For the rest of her life Anna had no home of her own, but alternated between her three children in Iowa and California. Andrew's certificate of election, policeman's whistle and other memorabilia from his time in office are now part of the Museum collection in Elk Horn, Iowa.
