"FRED K. CLEMMENSEN" "Fred K. Clemmensen, long time Sheriff of Audubon County, was born September 29, 1881 in Elk Horn [Iowa]. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jens Clemmensen, and grew up in the Elk Horn area. As a young man, he entered the garage business, selling Ford cars with his brother, Emil, for many years. He was also in the furniture and undertaking business with George L. Gore for several years."

"He married Amelia Mare Steffensen November 1, 1905, and there were 13 children born to this union: Emaline, Norman, Clarice, and infant boy, Imo, Gladys, Delma, Alma, Lee, Glen, Darlene, Milo, and Nadine. Five of the children died - 4 in infancy, and Emaline in 1920. Clarice married Everett Black in 1928; three children: Donna, Janet, and one son, Roland; Imo married Leo Myers and had two daughters, Doris and Charlotte, and one son, Dale; Gladys married Evald Nielsen and had one son, Donald; Lee married Helen Hansen and had two daughters, Julie and Susan, and one son , Paul; Glen married Nettie Wenig and had three sons, Craig, Mike and Mark: Darlene married Harley Schrader and had two children, Steve and Debbie; Milo married Dolores Bruun and had four children, Ross, Rex, Sheri and Kirk; Nadine married Jerry Heiken and had three sons, Ronald, Russell, and Jeffery, and one daughter, Laurie."

"Fred Clemmensen was sheriff of Audubon County for 19 years form 1927 to 1946. He was very active in all community functions and had a career of very interesting official duties. He took part in many raids in the prohibition days on illegal stills in many counties. He was in on one of the unsuccessful attempts to capture the famous Bonnie and Clyde gang, and was sheriff when the only bank robbery of Audubon County was discovered in Kimballton."

"He had a huge collection of contraband taken from the many prisoners he had captured and held in the Audubon County jail. You must remember these were the days of no radio communications between automobiles. Cattle rustling, horse thieves and chicken thieves were at their peak. A shoulder holster was just a part of the daily attire for Sheriff Fred Clemmensen."

"He died January 25, 1955."
