About Anna Barbara Hoffmann
Frederick and Barbara Hoffmann and their seven children started for America, in October 1830. Besides being poor, misfortune befell them at the outset, as the father died on board the ship in the harbor of LeHavre, France, but was taken ashore and buried. After the death of Fredrick, Barbara Hoffmann didn't lose her courage, but boarded the ship once again with her seven children, bound for America heading west.
The ship was scheduled to land in Baltimore, Maryland, but for unknown reasons the captain did not take them to that port. After almost three months voyage they landed at Charleston, South Carolina on New Years Day, 1831.
Upon their arrival the Hoffmann family had but one dollar to their name so they stayed six weeks in Charleston to earn some money. Then they left for Baltimore, Maryland via water. From Baltimore their journey continued via wagon over the mountains of Pennsylvania to Steubenville, Ohio, and then to Canton, Ohio. Here the Hoffman family settled for about three year on a rented farm. It was located South East of Canton. Ohio
In January 1834 the Hoffmann's moved to a farm southeast of Elmore, Ohio where they took up a government claim of 80 acres of land. Then in December 1842 they moved to a farm near Millersville southwest of Fremont, Ohio. The Hoffman's were early settlers of Ottawa and Sandusky county, and bore bravely the hardship of the pioneer life.
Her birth name was Anne Barbara (Black) Hoffmann. She always went by her nickname Barbe.
