Researching the ancestry of Anne Marthea's family was made easier by the fact that they owned and resided on the farm called Hole or Hoele væstre (west) for three generations before they emigrated. The farm is located to the northwest of Oslo in what was Kristians Amt. In Norwegian, Amt and Fylke are the equivalent of counties. In 1756, the present Fylker of Hedmark and Oppland were divided from Akershus Amt and were known as Oplandenes Amt. Oplandenes Amt in 1781 was divided into Hedemarkens Amt and Kristians Amt. In 1919, the name Kristians Amt was changed to Opland Fylke and in 1949 to Oppland. Because all of the Norwegian material in this book is primarily before 1919, Kristians Amt has been used almost exclusively. Hadeland is the judicial district for this area.
