Anna Myburgh (1954 - 2010)

Brief overview:

Anna (65), was attacked on 18th February 2010, but passed away on 18th October 2010, from extensive injuries, and after the trauma of being kidnapped, stabbed, tortured with a hot iron, and shot.

Mrs Myburgh, her daughter-in-law Edri Myburgh (28), and housekeeper Paulina Zithobeni Moyana (28) were attacked inside their homestead, forced into a vehicle and driven around on the Spitskop/Sairta road between Bronkhorstpriut and Witbank. Anna Myburgh was shot behind the left ear and Mrs Edri Myburgh shot inside her mouth, the women were then left for dead on the road. Edri was driven over when the car rolled.

  • The perpetrators - the Myburgh's gardener, Daniel Matshawarateu (23), and his neighbour Helton Matsimela (28), plead, and were found guilty of all charges by Magistrate Magriet Cook. The two attackers beat and tortured the women for seven hours, repeatedly burning Anna with a hot iron before they drove them out on a deserted road where they shot both women. Pauline Zithobeni Moyana was severely injured when the attackers lost control of the family’s car and crashed. Edri had raised the alarm after she regained consciousness and walked more than 10km through farm fields. Her mother-in-law was rescued when a motorist saw her.
  • Matsimela and Motshwarateu were caught close to where they had left the three women for dead. Family members listened in court to how their loved ones were tortured, because Motshwarateu was owed R40.
  • Anna's widower, Hans (67), spoke at the trial and Edri’s husband Henk (32), was also in court to hear the verdict, said "The kidnapping left the entire family having to deal with permanent trauma. Every time we come and sit in the court-room, all the old wounds are scratched open again. We as a family try to avoid it but it has unfortunately become an an integral part of all our lives." Edri did not attend the proceedings.
