In AD1667 a minister, Mr. Forrester, went to Duntreath without Archibald’s knowledge and had a private lecture in the Gallery there, for which Edmonstone was imprisoned in the Tolbooth (the common prison) in Glasgow for 6 months. He denied any connection with the meeting and was spared the death penalty and fined 500 pounds. Finally he was released on a petition by the Lady Duntreath (mother of Sir Robert Adair II) to the Duke of York and the Lords of the Council. His life was saved and the fine was provided by his stepson, Sir Robert Adair II of Kinhilt, who had borrowed the 500 pounds.Later, following Archibald Edmonstone’s death in 1689, Sir Robert Adair II claimed repayment of the loan from the estate and guardians of Archibald Edmonstone’s son, the young Archibald, stepbrother of Sir Robert Adair II.
