About Anna Tilghman

Not the wife of Christopher Tilghman, Sr. - she married a different Christopher Tilghman.

English records show that Mrs. Tilghman was a direct descendant of William, the Conqueror. (Disproved)

Disputed Spouse

Anna/Anne Sanders (the daughter of Edward Sanders) did not marry Christopher Tilghman, Sr. (https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Tilghman-6), the son of Nicholas Tilghman, Jr. (Nicholas Tilghman-7) as claimed in the publication “The Tillman Genealogy Spes Alit Agricolam”[11] for which there are no primary sources, she instead married Christopher TYLMAN-6 of Selling the son of Christopher Tilman/Tylman of Selling which is evidenced by the following primary sources:

  • Original parish register of St Mary the Virgin, Selling, Kent [12]
  • Original parish register of St Mary the Virgin, Minster, Kent [13]
  • Original parish register of St Augustine, Northbourne, Kent [14]
  • The Will of Christopher Tilman of Selling made 1599 [15]
  • The Will of Edward Sanders of Minster made 1608 [16]

They’ve been detached from each other.

UPDATE June 2019: An unchecked source in an old Gary Boyd Roberts book showed his wife as Anna Whetenhall. Everyone was thrilled because she led back to English Nobility. HOWEVER, after checking the cited source (a Harleain manuscript first mentioned by Stephen F. Tillman in Spec Alit Agricolam) it did not prove this marriage. After emailing Gary Boyd Roberts back in the late 1990s about one of his sources not proving the Whetenhall-Sanders marriage, he acknowledged the error and said that he would print an errata in a future book. I'm glad he followed through on his word and printed an errata in his 2004 book The Royal Descents of 600 Immigrants. In this book, he shows the correct lineage. John Sanders married the daughter of a Mr. Austen of Tenterden. Anna Whetenhall married John Code in London. While it severs our lineage back to Charlemagne, at least the truth has come out.
