Anna Sophia Wardour

Anna Sophia Wardour and two of her sons are buried in the centre part of the nave of Westminster Abbey. Their graves are now marked by small lozenge stones, near the grave of David Livingstone. The full size gravestones were taken up in 1834 with many others when the nave floor was re-laid. The original inscriptions were:

"Here lyes the body of Mrs Anna Sophia Wardour, who departed this life ye 17th Febr. 1736 aged 71. Here also lies the body of William Wardour, Esq, who departed this life the XVII July MDCCXLVI aged LX"

"Here lyes the body of Col. Tomkyns Wardour, who departed this life the XIII February MDCCLII aged LXIV. Here also lies the body of Elizabeth Wardour the widow of the above Col Tomkyns Wardour, who departed this life the 23 day of June 1767 aged 79".

Anna was the co-heir of Robert Rodd and married William Wardour of Whitney Court in Herefordshire in 1685 and died at Bath. He was Clerk of Appeals at Parliament. Tomkyns was a Lieutenant Colonel in the Guards and Colonel of the regiment of Invalids. He married at St James Westminster Elizabeth Jones, widow (nee Bourne). Anna's other son was Member of Parliament for Fowey in Cornwall and died unmarried. HIs cousin was John Wardour of the Excise Office.
