Anna Maria Mertz was born say 1740 Longswamp Township Berks County, Pennsylvania.
Citation #81 Maria's birth date is estimated from the assumption that she was at least 21 years old when her first child was born, and less than 50 when her last child was born.
Citation #82 DAR National number 751796, gives 1732 without evidence
She died between 1810 and 1814
Citation #83 John Zehner household, 1810 U.S. Census, Northampton Co., Pennsylvania, West Penn TWP likely includes her as the second female over the age 45 and was buried at Zion Church Cemetery in West Penn Township, where she shares a tombstone with her spouse that states Mary Mertz was the wife of Adam Zehner…The inventory of Peter Mertz on 6 August 1787 includes three substantial outstanding notes owed to him. Three notes from his son Abraham amounted to 30 pounds total. Another in the amount 14 pounds was from Peter Zehner, the oldest son of Adam Zehner and Anna Maria Mertz. There is no reason that Peter Mertz would loan a substantial sum to Peter Zehner unless the latter was his grandson and namesake. It is also significant that Adam Zehner's first three sons have the same names and birth order as Peter Mertz's. That Anna Maria was a daughter of Johann Peter Mertz seems almost certain, even though there is no direct evidence at all.
Citation #88 Three separate Mertz families arrived in Berks County before 1750. David Mertz with sons Johan Nicholas and Johan Peter arrived in 1749 on the ship Ann. David and his descendants settled in Longswamp Township near the village of Mertztown and worshiped at the Longswamp Reformed Church there. However, Johann Heinrich and Johannes settled about six miles way near Dryville in the Rockland Twp, and worshiped at the Christ Lutheran Church [also called Mertz Church, the Bieber Church, and the Dryville Church] there. Johann Heinrich Mertz granted land for the newly formed church. He and Johannes baptized several children and grandchildren there.
Over time, various Mertz historians have cross-connected the descendants of these three families in a web of confusion. Some Zehner researchers have attempted to identify Adam's wife as one of the children born at Mertz Church.
