About Anna Maria Kettenring
From WikiTree: The long-standing, but erroneously ascribed maiden name of Von Lautern to Anna Maria, wife of Hanß Jacob Kettenring, should be abandoned once and for all. As many familiar with the region from where Hanß Jacob and Anna Maria Kettenring resided have probably noticed when examining church and other records of the area, "von Lautern" is a place name not a surname. "Lautern" is a colloquial nickname for Kaiserslautern, and von Lautern quite literally means "from Lautern (Kaiserlautern)".
So what might be Anna Maria's true maiden name? A clue might lie in the extensive prior research of the late Clifford R. Canfield. excerpt from "My German Ancestors III (Catron/Kettenring and allied families, Wenrich, Zimmer, Faul)" by Clifford R. Canfield: When Juliana Margaretha Kettenring, daughter of Hans Jacob and Anna Maria Kettenring was baptized in 1675, the pastor left out the family name of one of the sponsors of the baby girl. He was Abraham ________, the mother's brother from Lautern (Kaiserslautern). The reason for the omission is unknown, but it is there as I (Clifford Canfield) have seen a copy of the baptismal record with a blank space. Through the efforts of Jurgen Nickchen of Speyer, Germany, Theodore Knocke of Immenstadt, Germany and R. Mazauric of Metz, France, I think the question of Anna Maria's maiden name is solved. Research was done in Kaiserslautern for young men named Abraham. It seems that only one met the requirements and that was Abraham Bichon (Pichon). After sifting through all the information I had collected it seems that much of it comes from F. Braun and F. Rink's book, 'Burgerbuch der Stadt Kaiserslautern, 1965'. Moses Bichon (Pichon) was from Metz, France and was born around 1600-1610. The name of his wife is not known for certain, but she may have been Anne Jacob. On 5 March 1650 Moses was a shoemaker and became a citizen of Kaiserslautern. In 1656 he was listed in some kind of a census as a shoemaker. Moses is said to have died before 1683. Their children (incomplete --not in order) 1. Abraham Bichon b. 20 November 1633 (not proven) 2. Anne Marie Bichon 3. Isaac Bichon 1. Anna Maria Bichon (born in or near Metz, France ?) married Hans Jacob Kettenring.
Canfield's intriguing theory is one that should be further pursued by re-examination of the church records and citizen (Bürger) registers. If true, the surname Bichon/Pichon could take the family history in a whole new direction, particularly if Moses Bichon/Pichon is confidently determined to be Anna Maria's father. The surname Bichon/Pichon is both a surname found among the Huguenots who fled France and also a historically Sephardic Jewish surname. And the given name, Moses, may be a further indication that the family origins could indeed be Jewish.
