Notes

1 - When the second Earl of Bute married a daughter of the first Duke of Argyll, she looked round the Mansionhouse with disdain and then informed her husband that it was far too cramped for someone of such high rank as herself. Her loving husband had probably been expecting something of the sort, because he took her to a window and pointed to the ruined, but massive castle nearby with its impressive moat. That's where you'd have started your married life, he told her, if your family hadn't burnt it.' Presumably this was only a lover's tiff because they remained together and their son became Prime Minister.
