  • 'Thomas FAIRFAX (Sir Knight)
  • Born: ABT 1475
  • Died: 1520
  • Notes: in 1513 served under Henry VIII on his expedition to Flanders, and when Tournai surrendered to the King, Sir Thomas was one of those who received the honour of knighthood. He left a large family of 6 sons and 6 daughters. Nicholas was his heir. William, the twin of Nicholas, settled at Bury St. Edmunds and was buried at Walsingham. His descendants became Church of England, as did Thomas the third son who became a priest in that church. Sir Thomas died in 1520 and was succeeded by his eldest son Nicholas at the age of 22.

She married (1st) about 1459-60 WILLIAM GASCOIGNE, Knt., of Gawthorpe, Yorkshire, and, in right of his wife, of Oversley, Warwickshire, Tyrley, Staffordshire, Womersley, Yorkshire, and Whatton, Nottinghamshire, son and heir of William Gascoigne, Knt., of Gawthorpe, Yorkshire, by Margaret, daughter of Thomas Clarell, Knt., of Aldwark, Yorkshire, They had three sons, William, Knt., John, and Humphrey, and four daughters, Margaret, Agnes (wife of Robert Plumpton, Knt.), Elizabeth and Joan. SIR WILLIAM GASCOIGNE died about 1463. His widow, Joan, married (2nd) by license dated 13 jan. 1463/4 JAMES HARRINGTON, Knt., of Hornby, Yorkshire. They had three sons, John, Thomas and William.

WILLIAM GASCOIGNE, Knt., of Gawthorpe, Yorkshire, Tyrley, Staffordshire, etc., Justice of the Peace for the West Riding, Yorshire, Knight of the Body for King Richard III, son and heir, born about 1450. He married before 1469 MARGARET PERCY, daughter of Henry Percy, Knt., 3rd Earl of Northumberland, 6th Lord Percy (descendant of King Edward III), by Eleanor, daughter and heiress of Richard Poynings, Knt. (descendant of King Edward I) [see PERCY 12 for her ancestry]. They had six sons, William, Knt., Henry, Thomas, Henry (again), John, and Thomas (again) and seven daughters, Margaret (wife of Ralph, Lord Ogle), Eleanor, Maud, Joan, Elizabeth, 'Anne (or Agnes)', and Dorothy. In 1480 he obtained a license to crenellate his house at Gawthorpe and impark over 2,000 acres of his demesne. He was knighted by Richard, Duke of Gloucester (afterwards King Richard III), on campaign near Berwick in 1481. He was present at the Batte of Bosworth in 1485. SIR WILLIAM GASCOIGNE died 12 Mar 1487.

They had six sons, Nicholas, William, Thomas, Miles, Guy, and Robert, and seven daughters, Anne (wife of William Harrington), Margaret (wife of William Sayre and Richard Mansell), Isabel, Elizabeth, Dorothy, Katherine, and ___ (wife of ___Dawny). SIR THOMAS FAIRFAX left a will dated 26 Nov. 1520, proved 20 Jan. 1520/1.
      • *16. NICHOLAS FAIRFAX, Knt., of Walton and Gilling Castle (in Ryedale), Yorkshire, Sheriff of Yorkshire, Knight of the Shire for Yorkshire, son and heir, born about 1499 (aged 22 in 1521). He married (1st) JANE PALMES, daughter of Guy Palmes, Esq., of Lindley, serjeant-at-law. They had eight sons, William, Knt., Nicholas, Thomas [Canon of Carlisle], George, Robert, Edward, Cuthbert, and Henry, and five daughters, Anne (wife of Christopher Anne, Esq.), Margaret (wife of William Bellasis, Knt.), Eleanor (wife of John Vavasour, Elizabeth (wife of ___ Roos), and Mary. He married (2nd) ALICE HARRINGTON, widow of Henry Sutton, Knt., and daughter of john Harrington, Knt., of Exton, Rutland. They had no issue. SIR NICHOLAS FAIRFAX died testate 30 March 1571, and was buried at Gilling, Yorkshire.
