The family of Coigniers was denominated from their ancient place ofresidence in the Duchy of Normandy; and one of them having attendedthe Norman Duke (William) in his victorious expedition into Englandwas rewarded by the Conqueror with grants and divers lands inYorkshire, whereup he settled in this kingdom and became the commonancestor of the several branches of the families of Coigniers,Coniers, Conyers, etc. The Bishop of Durham (died 1095) gave to Rogerde Coigniers the Constableship fo the City of Durham. His descendant,Roger de Coigniers was Lord of Howton Coignier and of Sokebourne, bythe gift of Ranulph de Durham, who d. 1128. Roger de Coniers, 3rd ofthe name was possessed of Howton Coigniers in com. Ebor and ofSokebourne in the County of Durham, 24 Henry II, said to be one of theBarons of that Bishopric.
