John Fitzpen (son of Owen Fitzpen and Anne Coiniers) was born 1604 in Melcomb, Dorset, England, and died 02 Jul 1644 in Ireland. He married Sara Seagrave. Sara Seagrave, daughter of James Seagrave and Eleanor Chillam. She was born Abt. 1609 in Shannon, Ireland, and died 1627.

He married (1) Elyn on Abt. 1652 in ?. He married (2) Elyn Travers on 1652 in Ireland. It is not known when the family name was changed from the old English form Fitzpen to Phippen, but it is generally believed this was done by his brother David to coincide with the move of his family to the Massachusetts Bay Colony. A number of David's descendants fought in the American Revolutionary War.
Owen and his wife, Annie, had at least three children born in Ireland before Owen's capture, one son of whom changed the spelling of the family name to Thigpen, yet a third variation. His grandson, James Thigpen, would be the first of his direct descendants to settle in America, this time to North Carolina. Thigpen's descendants would include two famous athletes, NFL great Yancey Thigpen (through slaveholders of the same name) and Major League Baseball's pitching sensation Bobby Thigpen.
He died at The Battle of Marston Moor.
With Sir Thomas Belasyse, he followed the fortunes of William Cavendish, Marquis of Newcastle, during the siege of York, which heldout 3 months against 3 great armies, and in the bloody battle of Marston-Moore, the King's Army was shattered. John and several of hiskinsmen lost their lives in this battle.
