About Anne Ethel Glass
Chana Bat Baruch Ve Leah
GLASS, Anne Ethel - Peacefully at the Apotex Centre at Baycrest, in her 107th year. Anne Ethel Glass, last surviving child of the late Benjamin and Leah Horowitz, who emigrated from Eastern Europe to Toronto in the first decade of the 20th century. Anne grew up at 416 Markham Street in Toronto, graduated with high marks from Harbord Collegiate at age 16 and became actively involved in the Jewish community of Toronto while still in her teens. At age 20 she married her beloved husband John J. Glass in 1929. He was then a young lawyer and a budding politician in Toronto's Ward 4 (alderman) who was later in 1934 elected an M.P.P. for St. Andrews riding where he served for nine years as a member of the Ontario Legislature. Anne was a devoted and effective partner during his political and professional careers. Small in stature, hers was a lively, intelligent and feisty personality who excelled in school, in the community and at life in general. Sadly, her first child, a daughter Susanne, died in early childhood. In 1932 she gave birth to her son, George Wilfrid and in 1934 to her son, Jesse Theodore. She nurtured them, worried over them, encouraged them and proudly watched them as they entered their professional careers. Unhappily, and still a relatively young woman, she was suddenly predeceased by John in 1973, and then by her grandson (George's eldest) Robert Glass in 2002 and by her son George Glass in 2005. She bore these blows with strength and fortitude. Throughout her life she was closely intertwined with her seven siblings and their families. She was the last survivor of the Horowitz family, having been predeceased by her parents and by her sisters Eva Tishler, Irene Greisman, Esther Cherry, and Raye Horowitz Miller, and by her brothers Max Horowitz, Louis Horowitz, and Jack Howard, all of whom she loved dearly. She leaves to mourn her passing and remember her eventful life, her son Jesse and his wife Nora, her daughter-in-law Helena Diamant Glass, her grandchildren David and Liliane Glass, Randi Glass, Dr. Karen Glass and Martin Halpern, Susanne Glass and her great- grandchildren Rebecca Glass, Joy Glass, Jay Crafton, Rebecca Halpern and Simone Halpern as well as many nieces, nephews and extended families. Throughout her life she was a devout member of Goel Tzedec and Beth Tzedec congregations and instilled in her families the importance of observing and celebrating holy days and festivals and Jewish traditions. Special thanks to the staff at the Apotex Centre at Baycrest and to her devoted caregivers Teresita (Tess), Afaga and Elena Orpia. At Benjamin's Park Memorial Chapel, 2401 Steeles Avenue W., (three lights west of Dufferin) for service on Sunday, September 20th at 4:00 p.m. Interment at Beth Tzedec Memorial Park.
