Notes

From https://www.gravesfa.org/gen123.htm

Some time after July 1662, when Edward Stevenson was still alive, but before 31 Dec. 1670, William Graves married, third, a wife named Ann who was then the widow (according to Mr. John Insley Coddington) of Edward Stevenson of Newtown. On the latter date she made a will [Coll. of N.Y. Hist. Soc., Wills, 1:467], styling herself as Ann Graves, wife of William Graves of Newtown, but this will, which mentions daughters Elizabeth Everit and Abigail Denton and cousin Thomas Stevenson, and was witnessed by Abraham Frost and John Pettit, was not allowed. Aside from the reference to her husband, no mention is made of the Graves family. It is clear that she gave birth to no Graves children.

Edward Stevenson was one of the early settlers of Newtown, Long Island. He was a near relative of Thomas Stevenson of the same place and was deceased by 1662, as on July 10th of that year the “widow of Edward Stevenson” signed the agreement made by the citizens of New town, to pay rent to the Dutch Director-General. Her name was Ann (or Anne), and at some time between the before-mentioned date and 1670, she married William Graves. Ann Graves’ will is dated at Newtown, December 31, 1670. In it she bequeaths to her “daughter, Elizabeth Everitt, a feather bed, a warming pan, an iron plate, a fire hovel, a pair of tongs and a trunk.” All the rest of her estate she leaves to “my two daughters, Elizabeth Everitt and *Abigail Denton, and my clothes that were prized by Mr. John Coe and Mr. Jonathan Fish, to her cousin Thomas Stevenson, she leaves her Bible.” William Graves, his son, John, and daughter, Hannah, had all passed away by 1679.
