About Anne Howard

Parents unknown. Not the daughter of Richard Hall & Marion Loveland

Biography

Extracted from https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Unknown-529736

Ann, last name unknown, married, possibly about 1635, Matthew Howard, last name unknown, whose transportation into Virginia he claimed -- probably having brought her here himself. [1]

Newman [2] states that Matthew Howard "married Ann Hall about 1630 and embarked within a short time for Virginia with two white servants."

Newman therefore places the marriage prior to the immigration, but without identifying what sources the statement was based on.

Ann was first mentioned in Virginia records on May 26, 1638, with no further known reference to her after July 6, 1640, although she undoubtedly lived a number of years after this.... It seems likely that Ann, the mother, had died only shortly before the children came to Maryland, in 1659. [1]

Immigrant Generation

Our Matthew Howard1 was presumably born in England perhaps ca. 1609 and died in Maryland about 1658. However, no proof of his parentage has been found.

A Matthew Howard emigrated to Virginia in the 1630s. There are a few traces of him in surviving records. In 1635 he sued a Mr. EVANS. In May 1638 Matthew and his wife Ann were granted land in Lower Norfolk County, Virginia, on the western branch of the Elizabeth River, bounded on the north by Broad Creek. In the immediate vicinity were grants to Robert TAYLOR, Edward LLOYD, Richard OWEN, and Cornelius LLOYD. The year before, Matthew Howard had with him "two persons unnamed", one of whom might have been a 17 or 18-year old Edward DORSEY. In 1645 he was executor for the will of Richard HALL, Virginia merchant. Richard Hall signed his will in Virginia 1 August 1648; it was proved 16 November that year. In it Richard left practically everything to Matthew Howard and his children.[3] Presumably this Richard Hall had no wife or children to inherit his estate.

Eventually a Matthew Howard and his wife Ann moved on to Middle Neck Hundred, Anne Arundel County, Maryland, apparently with their friend Edward Lloyd. Whether or not this is the same Matthew who was living in Virginia has not yet been proven.

Children of Matthew Howard, perhaps incomplete, order uncertain. The Biographical Dictionary lists males first, in this order, Samuel, John, Cornelius, Matthew, and Philip, followed by the females, Elizabeth, Ann, and Mary. I have put them in the order in which Fredric Saunders placed them, based on Richard HALL's will:[8]

Matthew HOWARD and wife Anne had children:

  • 1. Anne HOWARD b. ca. 1637; m. James GRENEFFE; living 1686
  • 2. Elizabeth HOWARD b. ca. 1639; m. Henry RIDGELY; d. 16696-16727 Anne Arundel County, Maryland
  • 3. Matthew HOWARD b. ca. 1641; m. Sarah DORSEY; d. between 3 Oct. 1691and 12 Jan. 1692 Anne Arundel County, Maryland
  • 4. Cornelius HOWARD b. ca. 1643; m. Elizabeth; d. between 15 April and 15 Oct. 1680 Anne Arundel County, Maryland
  • 5. John HOWARD b. ca. 1645; m. Susanna (NORWOOD) widow of Charles STEVENS; m. Eleanor, widow of John MACCUBIN; d. between 30 Dec. 1695 and 13 May 1696 Anne Arundel County, Maryland
  • 6. Samuel HOWARD b. ca. 1647; m. Catherine WARNER; d. between 28 Feb. 1702 and 9 Nov. 1703 Anne Arundel County, Maryland
  • 7. Philip HOWARD b. ca. 1649; m. Ruth BALDWIN; d. between 25 July 1701 and 24 Feb. 1701 [1702] Anne Arundel County, Maryland

Disputed origins

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Unknown-529736

Some genealogies show Ann's birth as 25 OCT 1610 in Felmersham, Bedfordshire, England. No source has been found to confirm this.

Matthew Howard had only one wife Ann. He is sometimes shown married to Elizabeth Todd. Elizabeth, however, who may or may not have been Todd, was the wife of Matthew's son Cornelius.

Other genealogies claim that Ann was of the Dorsey family, or was the daughter of Richard Hall. Find-A-Grave, without documentation, shows Matthew married Anne Hall (1610-1659) in Lower, Norfolk, Virginia, in 1631 and that Anne was the daughter of Richard Hall (1585-1645) and Marion Lee Loveland Hall (1580-1645).[3]

Not Ann Dorsey

Some Genealogies show the wife of Matthew Howard as Ann Dorsey, but without documentation. This possible last name is presented here to promote discussion of her parentage and further research.

Parentage: Not the Daughter of Richard Howard

The parentage of Anne is unknown. Her name at birth is unknown.

Anne was recently connected as the daughter of Richard Howard, without documentation.

Parentage: Not the Daughter of Richard Hall

There is a strong temptation to make Ann the daughter of Richard Hall due to Richard Hall's will, written August 7, 1648 and proved November 16, 1648. … It would appear obvious, since inheritance most often goes to one's next of kin, that Ann Howard must be Richard Hall's only daughter. But a careful review reveals none of any of the normal indications of kinship which are standard in wills, i.e. my beloved daughter, my eldest daughter, my son, my cousin, etc.

Therefore one is compelled to conclude that Richard Hall died without children, and willed his property to the Howards, who were clearly good and trusted friends, well known to Richard Hall and "almost family" -- but not quite!

Ann Howard is shown in some genealogies as the child of John Howard and his wife Elizabeth Lock John Howard's biography has been researched and Ann is not among his six children. Ann's parentage must be considered unknown.

map of Severn River area showing some early settlers' holdings

This map of the western side of the Severn River shows the holdings of some dissenter settlers in Anne Arundel County ca. 1650. The three families from which we are descended are Dorsey (yellow), Howard (orange), and Norwood (green). The dimensions and outlines of the individual holdings are not accurate. They just mark the general locations.

  • MATTHEW HOWARD, SR. was probably b. at least by 1610, and since he was not listed among those person living in Va., at the time of the 'Muster" of 1624/25, he clearly was not b. in Va. He d. sometime bet. 1652 and 1659, in Va.; m. possibly C1635, Ann (___), whose transportation into Va., he claimed - probably having brought her here, himself. It isn't known when Ann died. Her last child was b. C1651.
  • As will be shown below, the earliest record in America which mentions the name of Matthew Howard, of which we have knowledge, was dated 1635, and the last was in Dec. 1652. His wife Ann, was first mentioned in Va. records on May 26, 1638, with no further known reference to her after July 6, 1640, although she undoubtedly lived a number of years after this.

She was also a legatee in the 1648 will of Richard Hall, and her husband claimed land rights in 1664, for having transported her into Maryland. Actually, it seems doubtful that such was the case. Probably she transported herself, or perhaps one of her brothers brought her to Maryland, but if a woman married before land rights could be claimed for her, it was customary to allow her husband that privilege. Her bro. Cornelius came to Md. in 1659 and prob. the others too, and Elizabeth with them. For Known issue of Col. Henry Ridgley, which we believe to also have been Elizabeth's, see the Ridgley family.

Co., from 1671-75 [Ibid., pp. 39 and 71], and a Justice from 1680-82, during which latter period, his bro-in-law, Henry Ridgely, served as a Delagate [Ibid., p. 40].
