About Anne Huff

Anne B. Huff (Mrs. J. Roddy Huff) died on February 8, 2011, after a short illness. She was 88 years old.

Mrs. Huff was born in 1922 in the county of Surrey in southern England. She was the fourth of five children born to Sir George and Lady Boughey.

She met James R. (Roddy) Huff while he was an officer in the U.S. Army stationed in England during the Second World War. They were married in 1946, and she came with him to his hometown of Chattanooga at the end of the war. They bought a house on Missionary Ridge and lived there until 1974 when they moved to Signal Mountain.

She became a naturalized citizen of the United States in 1952.

Mrs. Huff was a member of the First Christian Church on McCallie Avenue where she taught Sunday school classes for 40 years. She continued teaching until shortly before her death. She also served as a deacon of the church.

In the late 1960’s Mrs. Huff founded and organized the Volunteer Community School. She was the school’s first director. She also served as bus driver, teacher, administrator and board member. With the help of the 9th street business community, and the support of the First Christian Church and other interested people, the school provided a head start to children of low income families before they entered the public school system.

Mrs. Huff served on the planning committee of the Chattanooga Hamilton County Bicentennial Library. After the library became operational, she organized the “Friends of the Library” as a public support group for the library.

In 1982 the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution awarded Mrs. Huff the Americanism Award in recognition of her trustworthiness, leadership, patriotism, and participation in community activity leading others to become better citizens.

Mrs. Huff was an active member of the English Speaking Union and served as its president. She was also active in the Walden Ridge Historical Society, the Review Club and the Walden Ridge Guild.

Mrs. Huff is survived by three children, nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
