About Anne Horndon Klasen

Biography

"Anne Horndon Hocking was apparently born on board the ship (name unknown to me but most likely to be one of P & O's vessels) of which her father (William Henry George Hockin) was apparently the captain, and thus her birth was registered in Hong Kong (being the port of destination) in 1872. She married Terence Herbert Klasen - a bank cashier - around 1894.
The family then emigrated to Southern Rhodesia in January 1923 via the Mocambique port of Beira and settled in Umtali, Southern Rhodesia. Terence passed away on 23 December 1923 in Umtali.
She must have returned to England after his death as there is a reference to a will and there are passenger lists references showing that she travelled from England to Beira both in 1925 and again in 1926.
Her 4th eldest - a daughter Cicely Christine Janet Klasen had married Raymond Bromley in 1920 and they had a daughter Daphne who was born in 1920. Cicely died in 1923 and Anne was asked by her son in law to raise her granddaughter.
On 27 October 1928, my Grandmother Doris gave birth to my aunt - Rosemary (out of wedlock) and even though Rosemary assumed the Ellis surname (which could only have been after Doris and my Grandfather Anthony John Ellis were married in 1931), Anne took Rosemary under her wing and went off to Australia.
Anne, Daphne and Rosemary are listed as passengers on board the M/V Themistocles on which they embarked at Cape Town and arrived at Adelaide on 21 June 1935.
Although: The three of them were also recorded on a previous passenger list for the M/V Largs Bay which departed from Adelaide on 26 December 1933 with their destination being London. Anne and Daphne as well as Anne's son - Ronald Eric Horndon Klasen - are shown as departing Adelaide on 9 August 1930 on the M/V Eupripides with the destination shown as South Africa. I don't think that Anne did much travelling after that and she seemed to have settled in Adelaide mainly because her son Ronald had immigrated there, and she continued to raise the two granddaughters who she had dragged along with her.
Anne passed away on 18 June 1941 and is buried at West Terrace Cemetary in Adelaide - Road A Extension, Row 6E Site No 21.
With regards to Albert Klasen - my cousin informed me that she was told by her mother - that Albert had commenced with the survey of Adelaide which Colonel William Light is renowned for." -info. : email from D.L. April 2024
