About Anne Lee

There is no evidence Anne daughter of Lancelot Lee was the Anne Lee who married Robert Lee. Stirnet has her married to Thomas Shadwell in 1665 (noting she is presumed to be of this family and marriage, perhaps having also heard both Lee Magna and Cotton Hall claim William). Another guess for her father is an unknown son of Hugh Lee d.1620 (son of Robert Lee, Mayor of London) and Mary Bernard of Great Burstead, Essex. They were married 1617 so Mary Bernard could not be her grandmother and they are only known to have two sons. John Lee of Farmington b.1620 is thought to be from an illegitimate line, if he were Hugh's son Anne could be his half-sibling or cousin. Both Anne and John have descendants with connections to Great Burstead and the Lee's and Bernard there including the families of, Gore, Marvin, Parker, Strong and others whom all intermarried. John Lee's great grandson Elijah Parker and Anne Lee's great granddaughter Sarah Lee Maple were co-founders of the 1st church in Decatur N.Y. However there are no unaccounted for Anne's in this Lee family either, there is a free Anne Lee of Darnhall born about the same time as Lancelot's daughter, both a little late to be the mother of Robert Lee's children (Anne could not be born later than 1624). The best choice for Anne's father is Henry Lee of Buckinghamshire d.1637 who married (3rd, probably his daughter Anne's mother) Anne/Agnes Lee of Binfield, whose daughter Anne was under 21 at the time of his death. Henry's mother was Joan daughter of Henry Wyse of Oxfordshire, probably a branch of the Devon Wyse who married into the Devon Lee's. Sarah's brother in-law was David Lee whose family was of the Devon Lee's. That could explain Sarah's closeness to David's family and her marriage to Benjamin Maple, David's half brother. She and David could be related through the Wyse (an old English family who predate the Norman conquest). Anne/Agnes's 1st cousin Edmund Lee married Dorothy Browne a relative of Anne's daughter in-law's mother Mary Browne. If Anne was the daughter of Lancelot her descendant the Union Gen. Albert Lee would have been the 7th cousin of Gen. Robert E. Lee. As far as I know Albert never claimed relations but if a Union general was a cousin of Robert E. Lee that would have been noteworthy.
