note: Illischestie, then a rural parish in southern Bukovina, is now known as Ilisesti and is part of Suceava county, Romania. The term "Bukovina-German" refers to German Swabian emigrants who settled in Bukovina, a southeastern region of Austria-Hungary about two hundred years ago. In their Bukovina villages these Germans maintained the customs, language and dialects of their ancestral homes. After a century of farming in Bukovina, Swabian Lutherans left from Illischestie to find new land and new opportunities in the United States. Many, like the Rumpel family, went to Lewis County, Washington. "Bukovina" means "Land of Beech trees." Thus the heavily forested hills, fertile valleys and a moderate climate of Lewis County attracted Bukovina immigrants in the mid to late 1880s. In the southwest corner of Washington State, where Lewis County is located, large hop fields were in need of agricultural workers. Timber companies were logging what seemed to be an inexhaustible supply of trees. Sawmills to process the trees were being built throughout the area. There was coal to be mined.
