Biography

http://web.hardynet.com/~bunnyhollow/eggleston.html

Richard's spouse is unknown, no records have been found showing her accompanying him from England. From that it can be assumed that he married here, perhaps a widow with land but that is pure speculation. What is known is that they had at least one child; however, whether there were more children is unknown because the earliest records of James City County were destoyed during the Civil War.

Children:

  1. Benjamin Eggleston Sr, Born about 1652 in James City County, Virginia. Married 1) unknown 3) Elizabeth, widow of William Hartwell.

Disambiguation

Perhaps the name “Ann Prince” comes the Ann Prince who married a different Richard Eggleston (b 1638, son of Stephen Eggleston & Elizabeth Bennnett), on 19 July 1660.

Notes

two Richard Egglestons left London for Virginia: one, aged 16 on July 6 on the ship Paule and one aged 24 July 4 on the Transport. It is unknown which man arrived in Jamestown. He was indentured to Reverend Thomas Hampton, the rector of Jamestown parish. Hampton had a lot in Jamestown but he also had land at "The Neck" where , at that time, the island was connected at its western end to the mainland. Richard Eggleston probably began there. using a hoe to plant and tend tobacco. He probably served seven years as an indentured servant.

Beginning in 1652 Richard's name began to appear on land rolls and other records. He had been busy after his indenture expired. One avenue to success was to marry a land-owning widow.

Richard eventually amassed land holdings of over 1,300 acres.
