Anne McNeil Smith

MICHAELS Anne Love Smith, a St. Michaels resident and mother of actress Julianne Moore, died unexpectedly Wednesday, April 29, at Dorchester General Hospital in Cambridge. She was 68 years old. Smith was born on July 9, 1940, in Greenock, Scotland. She moved to Burlington, New Jersey, with her parents, Henry and Flora Love, and her brother, Ian, when she was 10. Later, she became the high school sweetheart of fellow Burlington High School student Peter Moore Smith. They married on May 6, 1960.

Anne is survived by her husband, Army officer Col. Peter Moore Smith (retired), and their three children, Julianne Moore, Valerie Wells, and Peter Moore Smith III, and by her brother, Ian Love. She delighted in her grandchildren Porter, John, Caleb, Brett, Liv and Wolfgang. Caleb and Liv are the children of actress Julianne Moore and film director Bart Freundlich. Moore has appeared in a number of films that have received Oscar recognition, including her roles in "Boogie Nights" (Best Supporting Actress nomination), "The End of the Affair" (Best Actress nomination) and her two 2002 films, "Far From Heaven" (Best Actress nomination) and "The Hours" (Best Supporting Actress nomination). St. Michaels residents frequently spot Moore walking with her children when she visits her parents.

Freundlich, who is an actor, writer, director and producer, has been involved in "The Rebound," "Californication," "Family Practice," "Trust the Man," "Catch the Kid," "World Travels," and "The Myth of Fingerprints." His first full-length documentary film, "Hired Hands," received praise and awards at the Sundance Film Festival. He also wrote and directed a short film, "A Dog Race in Alaska." He and Moore, who have know each other since 1996, have been married since 2003. Moore has appeared in several of his films.

While raising her three children, Smith attended many schools, including Canal Zone Junior College, Juneau Douglas Junior College, and the University of Nebraska, ultimately graduating Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Briar Cliff College, a master of education degree from Boston University, and a master's in social work from Catholic University. She loved children and family and her career as a counseling psychologist and social worker. She had worked at Dorchester General Hospital in Cambridge.

Smith and her family traveled the world and lived in many places, including New Jersey, North Carolina, Alabama, Georgia, Texas, Panama, Nebraska, Alaska, New York, Virginia, Germany, Washington DC, and, finally, Maryland. The waters of the Chesapeake reminded her of the coastal town in Scotland where she was from and so she and her husband Peter settled in St. Michaels, living there together 19 years.
