Annette Abel La Grande, 92, long-time Colusa County resident, past away February 27, 2008, at Valley West Care Center in Williams, after a long illness. Visitation will be Friday, March, 7 from 5-7 p.m. with a Rosary recited beginning at 5:30 p.m. at McNary-Moore Funeral Chapel, 107 5th Street, Colusa.

Funeral services will be Saturday, March 8 at 11:00 a.m. at the Catholic Church of The Annunciation, 617 8th Street, Williams, followed by interment in the Williams Cemetery.

Born in Madison, in Yolo County, to Melvin Daniel and Edna Pearl Abel, Annette and her siblings transplanted to Colusa County as young children, following the death of their mother. Annette and her sister Evelyn were raised in Williams by their paternal aunt, Dorothea “Tennie” (Abel) Edmonds, youngest daughter of a pioneering German immigrant family to Colusa County. Their brothers, M.D. and Frank, were raised by their father on the Abel home ranch, west of Williams.

Annette graduated as Valedictorian, Williams High School, Class of 1934. She then worked as secretary at the Williams Grammar School for Principal Joe Mitchell, and began typing and editing speeches for Mrs. Lou Salter, state leader in the California Women’s Club. Annette also worked for Mrs. Salter’s husband, Dr. Ney Salter, as receptionist, bookkeeper and nurse. She had many a poignant tale of caring for Colusa County patients during the Great Depression.

In 1939 Annette married local farmer Steve La Grande. They moved into a small house that Steve and his brothers built south of Williams. There Annette and Steve raised six children, five of whom are surviving: Daniel La Grande of Portland, Oregon; Dorothy Rothwell of Vail, Arizona; Dianne Lorenz of Paradise, California; Dixie La Grande and Dennis La Grande, both of Williams. A son, David La Grande, died in 1989. Annette is also survived by eight grandchildren, five great grandchildren (with another on the way), plus a nephew and two nieces.

Annette’s life was focused on her family and her community. She enjoyed gardening, entertaining and traveling. She was a woman of strong opinions and delighted in expressing them. Annette had a great appreciation of local history and was instrumental in founding the Sacramento Valley Museum and restoring the Williams Arch.
