Mrs. Dickson Dies at 95: Pioneer Merchant's Widow
Mrs. Annie Mae (Mother) Dickson, widow of the late Col. H. H. Dickson, co-founder of Dickson-Ives, died at a Merrit Island nursing home yesterday afternoon. Mrs. Dickson would have been 96 years old in March.
Mrs. Dickson has been in poor health for several years and was confined to her room the last three years as the result of a fall on the steps of the first Methodist Church here in the late 1920s. She never fully recovered.
Near Daughter - Mrs. Dickson moved to the Crowder Nursing Home two years ago to be near her daughter, Mrs. R. B. Brossier, who now lives at Cocoa Beach.
Mrs. Dickson was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Nelson, Brunswick, GA. The family was an old Southern one and had been prominent in Confederate circles. She married Mr. Dickson in 1879, first living in Atlanta. They moved to Orlando in October, 1887, where Mr. Dickson first engaged in the feed business and later with the late Mr. Sidney E. Ives founded the store that still bears their names.
The Dicksons were prominent in all circles in Orlando.
Mr. Dickson served as county commissioner for 16 years, being chairman of the board for 10. He was instrumental in having the first hard surfaced roads constructed in the state. He helped organize the Orange County Building and Loan Assn, of which he served as president for a number of years. He was a member of the Orlando Utilities Comm. from its organization.
Beauty Lover - A great lover of beauty, Mr. Dickson made it possible for residents to purchase azaleas at a greatly reduced price. For his effort in beautifying Orlando, a park is named for him in the ravine along Ferncreek at Washington and Jefferson Sts.
Mrs. Dickson was a social leader in her younger days and was very prominent in church work, being a devout member of the First Methodist Church. Their home on S. Orange Ave was one of the social centers of the community where her daughter, Miss Ethel Dickson, now Mrs. R. B. Brossier, and her son, the late Harry N. Dickson, were reared. Col. Dickson died in 1935.
