Birth: Jan. 24, 1877 Coweta County Georgia, USA Death: Jun. 11, 1968 Coweta County Georgia, USA
Annie Mae Beavers was the oldest child of Wiliam J and Mattie Lyle Beavers. She was born and lived her early childhood in Coweta County, Georgia, where she attended a one-room schoolhouse and walked to school in all weather: rain or snow.
Annie Mae developed into a beauty with a wry sense of humor and quick wit. She had a naturally serious nature, strong sense of right, and a will to work hard at duty. Apparently, her family moved for a time to Carroll County, Georgia, where Annie Mae met and was courted by a young John V Hart. Annie Mae and John were married on 12 Sep 1897 in Carroll County at the bride's home.
After the marriage, John and Annie Mae moved to Polk County and lived near Annie's parents' family in the 1900 census record. Soon after this their beloved first child, Mary Emma Hart, died of scarlet fever. John made a living through farming but also became an ordained Baptist minister. Other children soon followed, and the family moved back to Carroll County by the 1910 census. By the 1920 census, the family had moved to Haralson County, Georgia. Again, in the 1930 census the family is living in Carroll County.
In their later years, the family lived in the town of Villa Rica, Georgia, where Mamma Mae (as I called my grandmother) enjoyed visits from family and grandchildren. She kept a little cigar box full of trinkets under her old foot pedal sewing machine in the living room. The grandchildren knew that they could get the box out and play with whatever she had put in it to surprise us.
Mamma Mae was also a noteworthy cook. She had an old cast iron wood stove where she often kept a pot simmering on the back burner. I recall once she had made a delicious pot of chicken and dumplings. My brother asked for more but all had been consumed. Mamma Mae did not want to disappoint the little fellow so she quickly made up another batch of dumpling dough and dropped them into the simmering broth as we watched. In no time, more dumplings were ready for us to eat!
In her old age, Mamma Mae came to live with our family after John became ill and she could no longer care for him. Mamma Mae would sit on the porch swing and tell wonderful stories about her child hood and life. When Mamma Mae had her stroke just before her death, she fell in her room and began calling for John (who had been dead then for 8 years). She must have loved and relied on him all her life because he is the one she called for.
