About Annie Lois Smith
Birth: Sep. 18, 1919 Haralson County Georgia, USA Death: Nov. 9, 2000 Coweta County Georgia, USA
Lois was the youngest of ten children and was somewhat petted as a baby, no doubt due to the death of another infant just a year before her birth. She loved a doll given her by her grandfather Beavers and had a particular pet kitten she adored.
In school, Lois was smart but very shy and hesitant to speak up in class. She enjoyed basketball and had many friends. Lois attended a small neighborhood school through the tenth grade. Her school was so small that there was no 11th grade class available locally and, being too shy to move to a big school to finish, she did not graduate. Lois lived with her maiden aunt Leona Hart in the town of Villa Rica and worked in a store there for a time. She also worked a factory job during the war years.
After the war, Murdock Smith, who was a friend of her brother Frank Hart, came courting and a romance blossomed. They were married 29 May 1948 and started housekeeping in a little home near Concord Church, in Paulding County, Georgia.
Lois was a loving wife and mother who gave unselfishly of her time to help others. She raised beautiful flowers where ever the family lived. She was especially proud of her azalea bushes and hydrangeas. Lois had a special knack for biscuit-making, rolling and patting the dough lovingly by hand without benefit of rolling pin or biscuit cutter. Her children still describe them as the "world's best biscuits."
Lois was a home maker in the true sense of the word. When the children came home on the school bus in the afternoon, they would be greeted by the aroma of fresh baked cookies, pie, cake, cocoa bars, or "sticky buns." The family also enjoyed lots of home-made ice cream, hand-churned butter, and rich milk from a Jersey cow named Bossy.
Lois always stressed the importance of doing well in school. She would help her children with homework late into the night if need be, sometimes nodding off while listening to Latin declensions or historical data.
Over the years, Lois also enjoyed reading historical novels, playing checkers, and watching her television shows, such as I Love Lucy, Our Miss Brooks, and Art Linkletter. However, her greatest enjoyment was in her grandchildren, her shining stars.
Lois faithfully cared for Murdock as he became more and more feeble. After his death, she lived alone, caring for her flowers and pet cat, and looking forward to visits from family. Lois had a series of mild strokes and also was afflicted with osteoporosis and mild diabetes. Gradually it became apparent to those of us who loved her that Lois was suffering from Alzheimer's disease, and she began to require more and more assistance. When she could no longer be cared for at home, she had to be placed into a nursing home where she later became ill and died.
