About Annie Saunders

These families had connections in Lawrence, Franklin, Lincoln and Moore

Counties in Tennessee ~ and possibly more, plus Georgia and North Carolina.

William SA(U)NDERS (both spellings were used) married Annis "Annie" (possibly

Awalt-Auvert) DANIEL around 1812 either in Georgia, North or South Carolina.

Annie was the daughter of Joseph Joab "Job" DANIEL and Elizabeth A. CALLAWAY

who were also the grandparents of Jasper Newton "Gentleman Jack" DANIEL of

distillery fame. They initially lived in Lawrence County, Tennessee when

first arrived.

Many have said that William ran away and left Annie with eight children to

raise. This is NOT what my Grams, born 1869, and her children said...

"William died when his children were young". And, I have recently been told

that Annie's tombstone reads "WIDOW of William SANDERS" ~ Annie, after

William had DIED remarried to John WAGGONER from the Moore County area.

Annie's and William's children:

1. Elizabeth SANDERS who married Tillman M. SMITH, and then Nimrod

SANDRIDGE... after Annie died in 1858-9, they moved to Marshall County,

Alabama with brother Hardy and his Catherine.

2. Benjamin F. SANDERS married secondly to Anne HOLLY or HOLLIDAY.

3. Hardy Holman SANDERS, born 1816, married ONLY Catherine Anne CLAMPET in

1835. Many have said his first name was Henry... but it was NOT. Many have

said he married again in 1843... but he did NOT.

4. William S. "Boone" SANDERS, born 1818, married Martha E. DRIVER, daughter

of Benjamin.

5. Cynthia SANDERS, born circa 1821, married Jonathan Milledge REYNOLDS and

also known today as RUNNELS. Her second husband was Reubin WEBB.

6. Felix "Harp" or Harper SANDERS, born October 22, 1825, married the two

GRAMMER sisters, Elizabeth J. and then Emily of Franklin County, Tennessee.

Elizabeth's children: Riley; Edward; married Callie DAMRON and James who

married Ida DAMRON. Thirdly, (or possibly secondly) he married Louisa HICE,

children: Syndonia, William M., and John Felix Harp SANDERS who married Mary

Ann BRANCH.

7. Nancy SANDERS, born circa 1827, married (Reverend) William H. NEAL.

Children John, William and Thomas NEAL.

8. Mary SANDERS, married Reverend NEAL after her sister Nancy died.

NOTE: Hardy and Catherine CLAMPET SA(U)NDERS were married September 28, 1835

in Madison County, Alabama... had a second ceremony in Jackson County,

Alabama... then they drove their buggy back to near LOST CREEK in Franklin

County, Tennessee where they had all but their last child, Stephen SANDERS.

1. John H. SA(U)NDERS, born 1836

2. George H. or W. SA(U)NDERS, 1838

3. Melvina J. SANDERS, 1840

4. Emily SANDERS, 1842

5. Elizabeth SANDERS, 1844, married secondly FORD (?)

6. Wiley SANDERS, 1846

7. Malinda (Sidney-?) SANDERS, 1848

8. Hardy H. SANDERS, Jr., 1850, died in Miller Cty, Arkansas

9. Pinkney "Pink" SANDERS, 1852, killed during the Civil War while home

alone molding bullets for his mother.

10. Andrew Masten SA(U)NDERS, 1854, married Eliza Anne HENDREN in Jackson

Cty, Alabama, he died in Texarkana, Miller Cty, Arkansas.

11. Trissa "Trissy" SANDERS, 1856, married George W. THOMAS in Marshall Cty,

Alabama.

12. Isaac SANDERS, born 1858.

13. Stephen SANDERS, born 1860-3 in Marshall Cty.

Does anyone have a list of children (22-23) for Reverend Billington McCARTY

(McCarter) SA(U)NDERS, early Georgia Baptist Minister. Born December 2, 1789

in Columbia County, Georgia, first child of Ephraim and Nancy Billington

SA(U)NDERS. First married Martha LAMAR and had nine children. Then married

secondly to CYNTHIA HOLLIDAY, February 25, 1824 and they had thirteen

children. Billington was given credit for the establishment of MERCER

University at Penfield, Georgia. He died in 1853.
