About Elizabeth Daniel

Joseph (Job) Daniel was a soldier in The War of Independence and Elizabeth was denied pension because she could not prove marriage to Joseph or his service. Elizabeth may have been married to someone named Andress before her marriage to Joseph. She told her grandchildren that she eloped from Scotland with the family coachman. It is unknown if this was true or not, but it makes a great story. Joseph and Elizabeth were the grandparents of Jack Daniel. Cathy, Thank you for writing your note. I really appreciate your seeking accuracy and will try to respond without getting suspended from future postings. You may just hafta read between the lines. <g>

First, I haven't read the "History of Wayne County, Tennessee" as yet. Is page 186 too long to type out for the board here? If not, would you mind? Also, is this the article written by a DANIEL descendant who was either an editor or news reporter back in time from around Wayne County?

Admittedly, the information on Robert C. DANIEL that I posted, with a few additions, was taken from very questionable material supposedly initially gathered in 1911 and now in the Franklin County Tennessee Library (and stamped by the library as "Project Preservation" April 25, 1990, Franklin County). You can probably receive it by asking for the MOTLOW papers and exhibits. Just be sure and obtain ALL of it, including a letter supposedly written by Felix W. MOTLOW in March of 1946... yet NOT SIGNED nor NOTARIZED in the spaces provided... well, an old typewriter was used anyway.

There are a number of items within these papers in which I totally disagree, plus there are very obvious contradictions within as well; and know personally a couple items to be outright wrong... one being that my great great grandfather, William Arthur SA(U)NDERS, deserted his spouse, Anne Elizabeth "Annie" DANIEL, daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth CALLAWAY DANIEL... and left her with eight children to raise. The poor soul just died at an early age... somewhere in the 1830s, after the death of their twin babies.

This particular information came to me from my Grams (1869~1969) through her mother-in-law, Catherine CLAMPETT, born 1818, and who married Annie's son, Hardy SANDERS, in 1835. They lived in the same general Tennessee area until after Annie DANIEL also died intestate in 1859, which was when they moved to Madison County, Alabama. I'm fairly certain I know exactly why this particular item was written in error, as I was present during a heated disagreement over these DANIEL relatives' history between my Grams and a now unknown DANIEL "researcher" back in the 1940s.

BTW, my Hardy Holman SA(U)NDERS never married ANYONE ELSE, but for some reason, there in Franklin/Moore County, someone decided to attach him to another lady and, with the same brilliance, decided he was named Henry Holman SANDERS, son of Annie DANIEL... making my grandfather illegit when he was born in 1854 to Catherine and Hardy.

Just now I went back through the marriages of Robert's children, but his particular line is not one that my Grams knew much about, with the exception of the marriages to SISCO and ARMSTRONG families... and feel sure that doesn't help you much.

However, I see that I never came back and posted another brother "ISAAC DANIEL" and his families. He lived in WAYNE COUNTY TENNESSEE also and I know definitely he came from this group of brothers... maybe something in Isaac's families will give you clues when I get them posted. In time, I will probably go ahead and post all the children listed as being from Joseph DANIEL, including the girls.

Believe me, there is nothing more that I would like than to clear up these Tennessee (maternal grandparents) DANIEL families, whom I still say were connected somehow to my Georgia (paternal grandparents) DANIEL families... Edmund "Uster" DANIEL + Elizabeth TEMBTE down through their son Henning DANIEL + Hannah ASBURY and so on.

For starters, proving the fabricated fairy tale that Joseph DANIEL was born in England; married in Scotland to "wealthy" Elizabeth CALLAWAY against her parents wishes would be a great start. Elizabeth, supposedly already a widow or divorcee at the age of thirteen or fourteen... give me a break! Oh yes, and Joseph was supposedly employed as coachman by this CALLAWAY family in Scotland. In these same papers, he and Elizabeth also supposedly married in Wayne County, North Carolina in 1778... or, also "just before the Revolutionary War were married".

Here's something interesting: "Elizabeth DANIEL on the 28th day of December 1844 appeared before a justice of the peace to make declaration of service of her husband Job, Joel or Joseph in the Revolutionary War. Had no papers to prove same and no living comrades to prove service of her husband. STATED that on the 28th day of December 1844 SHE WAS 82 (EIGHTY-TWO) YEARS OF AGE...etc." This would make her birth year 1762... but, when these "papers" were typed up many, many years after her death in 1853... while having access to the above information, they decided she was 96 years at death, making her birth year 1757. I believe the extra five years was needed to make their whole "fairy tale story" mesh, as I'm sure Elizabeth CALLAWAY~DANIEL knew exactly how old she was in 1844!

From personal papers, I know at one time Joseph was in Granville County, North Carolina with my SA(U)NDERS... and before that, I feel certain his parents, or grandparents, were in Virginia after Maryland. And, if there was any "England" birth... it was back in the 1600s. And, Elizabeth CALLAWAY's daughter Annie DANIEL~SA(U)NDERS didn't have a son called "BOONE" without reason either.

Now, to those reading my opinions here... I don't want any more nasty e-mails OR virus attachments... I'm smarter now! To those, I say, don't you really think it's about time the records were set straight? By continuing to aver that Joseph DANIEL was born in England, places an absolute DEADEND on this family and an albatross on researchers' shoulders who finally surrender to their frustrations because the information just isn't back in England. One would do much better by reading up on eugenics in our country first...

And, to you Cathy, I'm sorry that at this time I cannot be more helpful. There was a William DANIEL supposedly born in about 1780 who was a brother to Joseph's Robert C. DANIEL... and nothing is apparently known about him except that by 1844 was in Lawrence County, Tennessee... He could have had the name of "Hiram" also which he may only have used. But, he was supposed to have had a son named "Stephen" which you don't mention in your note, so I suppose William is out.

The "papers" I mentioned above state that eleven children of Joseph DANIEL and Elizabeth CALLAWAY had been found, yet only lists a total of ten, including "Abner" who died young. The rest are William ~ Isaac ~ Robert C. ~ Mary "Polly" ~ Anne ~ Callaway ~ Nancy ~ Reuben ~ and "John" born before 1790 and which is practically void of information.

"1830 census shows John DANIEL in Franklin County, Tennessee, the head of a family of four white and one slave, as follows: One male between 40 and 50 years of age, one female between 30 and 40, one female between 10 and 15, one female under 5 years of age, and the one female slave between 10 and 24 years of age. Nothing is known about him after 1830."

And here's a couple items from these same papers that I omitted, in part, earlier:

1. "Hiram DANIEL, son of Robert C. DANIEL and Nancy KINZEY was born in 1813 in Tennessee. The census of Bedford County in 1850 shows his wife Anne, age 31, also born in Tennessee. plus two sons: Wiley aged 2 years, and Solomon aged 1 month."

2. "There were three other children by first wife (entries in family Bible not legible). The following notation appears in the family Bible of Robert C. DANIEL: "Eleven children living November 3, 1850, and four dead."

J. Sanders,

I am searching for Elizabeth Andress (Andrews) Calaway's antecedants. She was born in 1757(Where?Scotland/England) and died in 1855 in NC. She married Joseph Job Daniel in Wayne Co., NC in 1778 and they lived in New Bern, NC when he entered service and when he returned from service. Joseph Job Daniel (Lawrence Co.,TN) died 1814 and buried in Franklin Co., TN. I have a record of only three children, Abner Daniel, the oldest who died young, William Daniel, and Isaac Calaway Daniel. There were others, I'm sure, for there were nephews or grandnephews named Motlow. I do not have a record of Reuben as a son. From what I have learned about this family history, it is replete with legend and tradition. Elizabeth Calaway married an Andress (1772)in Scotland before marrying Joseph Job Daniel in NC. I have learned a lot from Revolutionary War Pension application files.

A bill was introduced in US Senate by the late Sen. K. D. mcKellar, June 1949, to erect a monument at the grave of Elizabeth Daniel at Ridgeville, Moore Co., TN "having a suitable inscription" and "costing approximately $886 the amount of pension due her." Her pension claim was rejected originally.

Would appreciate any information that you have that might help me in my search. Thanks.

Annie,

Are you familiar with the Littleton Daniel family of Heard Co, GA?

This is the line I am looking for. Littleton had one brother Jesse and possibly

a

sister Patsy. Their father was Isham Daniel who d. c1815 in Chatham Co, NC.

John, First I thank you for most graciously giving of your time and effort to
aid me. Unfortunately, I do not recognize any of the surnames you listed.
Let me back up and give a little more history on my maternal DANIEL line
which I will assign as #1 DANIEL = William SANDERS aka SAUNDERS married Annie
DANIEL.

  1. 1. DANIEL, Anne (or possibly Auvert or something else, even Elizabeth

Auvert) supposedly was born in the 1790s perhaps in New Bern, N.C. or
possibly in South Carolina or Georgia. She, the daughter of Joseph Job(e)
DANIEL supposedly born 1750-53 in England ~ and Elizabeth CALOWAY-CALLAWAY
born circa 1757 in Scotland.

There has been speculation that Elizabeth Callaway was actually surnamed
ANDRESS or ANDREWS and had married a Callaway before Joseph DANIEL. Or, her
name was Callaway and she married an Andress. Therefore, none of the
following makes sense to me.

According to one old family tradition (not mine), which I believe some of it
to be romanticized hogwash created to plump up images of the DANIELs and also
the almighty DAR membership records. "Elizabeth Calaway was born into an
aristocratic family. She married Joseph, who was employed by the Calaway
family as a coachman, contrary to the wishes of her family. Elizabeth and
Joseph eloped and then sailed for America. They lived in New Bern [NC]
before and after the Revolutionary War. Joseph served as a soldier in the RW
in the 1st South Carolina Regt. commanded by Col. C. PINCKNEY."

"Sometime after the War, the DANIEL family moved to Tennessee and settled a
place in Franklin County on Coffee Creek. According to the family history,
Elizabeth was born 1757 in SCOTLAND and died 1853 in Franklin (now Moore)
County, Tennessee. Joseph was born about 1750 in ENGLAND and died about 1813
in Tennessee, probably in Franklin County. Elizabeth is buried in the
Chestnut Ridge Baptist Church Cemetary in Moore County. Joseph is probably
buried in an unmarked grave on a farm in Moore County." The foregoing
statements were 'created' in the 1920s, I believe.

This couple's children were:
1. Abner Daniel, b.c. 1779 and died young.
2. William John Daniel, b.c. 1780.

3. Isaac Daniel, b.c. 1784; served in War of 1812 and granted land based on
his service. He moved to Wayne County, Tennessee.
4. John Daniel, b.c. 1790.

5. Robert Callaway Daniel, b.c. 1791; served in the military and was granted
land. He supposedly married a Susannah.
6. Anne or Auvert Daniel, b.c. 1796-d.c. 1858 married William Sanders. Had
eight children, their names are questionable to some degree.

7. Callaway Daniel, b.c. 1800-January 21, 1864. married first Lucinda COOK
on January 27, 1847 and had five daughters and five sons before Lucinda died.
[She supposedly born in Greenville, South Carolina.] They were the parents
of Jasper Newton "Gentleman Jack" Daniel of distillery fame. In 1863,
Callaway married Matilda VAN ZANT and they had two daughters.

8. Reuben Daniel, b.c. 1804-April 23, 1863 married Susana WATTS on December
29, 1829.

9. Nancy Daniel, b.c. 1806-10, married Jeremiah DEAN born August 22, 1802 in
Flat Creek, Tennessee. They were married August 2, 1827. Their children:
Robert+Sarah Adeline BYRON; Mary Polly+Jack WILSON; John; Jane+Alexander
Riddle; Joshua+Mary ann CLARK and Elizabeth+Soloman BRANDON.

10. Geneva Elizabeth, b.c. 1812, second marriage to a BENNETT.

In 1980, we traveled to Jack Daniel's Distillery in Tennessee and talked with
a genealogists there. Their records were very scant about the family with a
lot of "ifs or ands " therefore, yet today I am not certain Anne or Auvert
Daniel was my GG-Grandmother or GG-Aunt. I've felt if I could just determine
this DANIEL migration history, then I might be able to find the SANDERS aka
SAUNDERS she married and possibly connect to my #2 Daniel line, or satisfy
myself there were no connections.

My Grams, born in 1869, knew "Gentleman Jack" [he brought her 'tonic' ~ grin]
and Grams said it was a brother, I believe, to my GG-Grandfather Sanders who
had married into the Daniels. So, after 25 years, I'm still practically at
square one.

  1. 2. DANIEL, Elizabeth G. T., born April 23, 1852 Heard County, Georgia. Died

May 24, 1923 Mt. Lebanon, Bienville Parish, Louisiana. Married October 20,
1872 in Heard County to James Kinchen Boone, born November 17, 1849 in Heard
County, Georgia ~ died October 6, 1913 in Mt. Lebanon. Elizabeth's parents
were Edmund DANIEL and Julia Ann Wilburn.

My father, William Cordy Boone, born December 9, 1890-April 1, 1975 told me
his mother's folks came from WALES. According to him, this was an absolute!
Today, no one agrees. And, I'm at a total loss. I do know there were G
wyndoln (sp-?) Thomas names back in the early, early days of WALES ~ and I
ask myself, just what the heck did the "G. T." stand for in my paternal Grams
Elizabeth G. T. DANIEL's name if not a carry down from her past?

I appreciate your and everyone's patience, and would be ever so grateful if
someone could just give me a boost in the right directions. I've been
through "History of the Cherokee Indians: Old Families and Their Genealogy"
by Emmet Starr and those DANIELs and SANDERS didn't seem to help as to my two
(or maybe one) DANIEL line.

SECONDLY, and last, I sure wish you guys would quit fussing... life is just
too short. It's wasted energy and detrimental to your work. The
pusillanimous pismires of the world don't go down in history.

Thank you for your time, and God's Blessings
Annie

For those who would to see Elizabeth Calaway Daniel tombstone go to findagrave.com, click on locate cemetery it will go to state click on Tennesseethen county click on Moore. Then on cemetery list find and click on Ridgeville CemeteryMike,

I would appreciate it if you would e-mail a copy of the photo of the gravesite of Eliz. Calaway and Job Daniel. I, too, would like to get more factual information on Elizabeth Callaway other than the traditional, romanticized version. I am very interested in her father and mothers' names and when, if by chance, they came to the colonies. One source says that her father was named John Calaway. Thanks again for your help.
