About Annie Ulie (Unie) (You Lye) (Lie) (Lye)
BIRTH & BAPTISM
Not found. Annie is a pet name for Agnes so she might have been baptised as Agnes somewhere with her family name misspelled.
From Linda Coonan
Bermingham met Irishwoman Annie Gillan who had who landed in Port Denison in January 1864 from the Wansfell, and it is possible that she looked after Agnes and within months they sailed to Maryborough.
Devastating floods in Rockhampton in February and March of 1864 had made living in the town a challenge, which is possibly why they didn't go to his former place of residence. Or, he wanted to avoid meeting his ex-wife. His skills as a carpenter and experience with sugar cane production may have influenced the choice of Maryborough, which had a fledgling sugar cane industry at the time, and was experiencing a building boom.
Bermingham could see the potential in the Maryborough area for the growing of sugar cane and was keen to share his knowledge. He did this in letters to the newspaper, and by inviting interested persons to inspect the demonstration models that he built of cane-crushing machines.
Annie gave birth in Maryborough on 17 May 1865 to John Simeon, the first of two children with Bermingham.
