About Annie Maria Ellen Warren

Sponsors at her baptism were; Ellen Holdstock and the parents. Her parents were Joseph Henry Nelson and Catherine Sarah Nelson née?

Ellen as she was know to all her was was a trick shottist with a rifle.

The Nelsons had to outspan their oxen opposit Thomas Howlett Warren house. It is believed that is how he got to know the family. When he approached Ellens father for her hand in marriage Joseph Henrey Nelson wanted him to marriy his eldest daughter, only then did he inform him it was the youngest daughter he wanted to marry. They got married, at which time she was 17 1/2 years old and he was 45. They had 4 children. When her youngest child Alexander George Norman was about a week old an african gentalman broke in the back window of their house. Ellen grabed a shot gun and in the grappeling she got shot in the leg. He then fled. Great granddad got home later that day, and had to take her to town for medical assistance. They only got to town around 10pm that evening. For the next few month hey kept bleeding the wound. She got weaker and weaker and died a few months later of lead poising, at the age of 22.

A wet nurse had to be found to feed my grandfather. It is believed that is was a Mrs Norman who had a daughter of about the same age who came forward to assist in tending his needs. We believe this is then where his 3rd name came from.

Granddad then joined the police force . As he always help the african gentalman with the "laloba" (bride Price) some of the locals came forward and informed him who the culprit was and when he could be located. Great granddad tracked him down, arrested him in Chalumna put him on the train in East London to Pretoria where her was then imprissoned. Never heard of him again.

Her children were then sent to stay with various aunts and uncles to be raised as their mother was not longer their to take care of then.
