GEDCOM Note

Anthony Garnett was the son of John Garnett.
But despite this, he is often referred to as Anthony Garnett Jr. on the records so as to distinguish him from his senior cousin Anthony Garnett the eldest son of Thomas Garnett. Anthony Garnett moved from Essex County to Spotsylvania, later Orange County Virginia. He was Vestryman and Church Warden of St. Mark's Parish from 1758, and a short account of his descendants appears in Dr. Slaughter's "History Of St. Mark's Parish". He married Amy Ferguson [or Farguson], daughter of John Ferguson / Farguson. In 1741 Anthony Garnett Jr. is described in a deed in Essex as a "bricklayer". After he moved to Spotsylvania County, a Deed there continues to describe him as a bricklayer. In 1741 he sold 50 acres of land left to him by his father to his brother John Garnett. In 1744 he purchased 500 acres in Spotsylvania where he located his home. In 1752 he sold 200 acres of this tract and was joined in this Deed by his wife Amy Ferguson Garnett. On October 31, 1752 Anthony Garnett and his wife Amy Ferguson Garnett of Spotsylvania County, a bricklayer, sold to William Cox 300 acres, "a tract of land in Orange County being part of a tract of 500 acres bought by Anthony Garnett of William Lea and which adjoins Anthony Garnett's plantation in Spotsylvania County, whereon he now lives". On the same date Anthony Garnett of Spotsylvania County sold to Edward Collins of aforesaid County, 200 acres in aforesaid County. This Deed is also signed by Amy Ferguson Garnett his wife.

Anthony Garnett along with his wife Amy Ferguson Garnett and their children moved from Virginia to Georgia. Anthony Garnett made a will in Augusta Georgia in about the year 1759. The will shows that he was then a "Planter" by occupation and the will was granted in the District of Augusta, Colony of Georgia. The Plantation where he lived consisted of 300 acres lying on the south side of the Savannah River in the District of Augusta sold to Anthony Garnett by William Clement on May 29, 1759 who had originally received the land by his Majesty's patent.
