PROBABLE FATHER OF ANTHONY NEWTON, IS JOHN NEWTON OF COLYTON, DEVONSHIRE, ENGLAND - NOT ROGER NEWTON. See article, "Probable Fathers of Hannah and Joan Newton, Wives of Joseph Phelps and Benedict Alvord of Windsor, Conn." by Edwin D. Witter, Jr. (The American Genealogist, Vol. 65, January 1990, Pages 13-16). Rev. Roger Newton was about the same age as Joan Newton. Most likely her father was John Newton and her brother, Anthony Newton, was the father of the Hannah Newton who married Joseph Phelps. Joan's baptism record is found in the parish of Colyton, Devonshire, England on 20 March 1616/1617. In his will, the father, John Newton, gives to "Anthony, my said son, and Joane, my said daughter, which are now in New England, six pounds apiece." (NEHGR, Vol. 49, Pages 384-5, 1895)..
