About Anthony Savory

Note: Anthony Savory is often cited as emigrating to the Massachusetts Colony in about 1633, but this was a different Anthony Savery (1609-1685).

Biography

Anthony Savery (1605 - 1647) was the son of Thomas Savery (abt. 1572) (son of Robert & Joan), and his wife Mary Woodrorke (1575 - abt. 1650)

Anthonie Savorie was baptised on 20 Jan 1605 N. S. at Hannington, Wiltshire. His godfather's were Anthonie Fferis [Feris] of Ashton [Keynes] Kemes and Thomas Mathew, and his godmother was Johan Edwards (image). His parents were not stated but his father was certainly Thomas Savery who left a will naming Anthony as his son as well as several other children. Anthony named two brothers in his own will, Thomas and Richard, who were also noted as sons in their father's will (see below).

Anthony was probably a baker as in 1630 an Anthony Savery of Highworth, baker, was bondsman to the marriage licence of Alice Boulton and George Savery who later married in Hannington.[1] His son, Anthony, was also a baker.

Anthony Savery and Marie Shepeard married on 16 Dec 1630 in Highworth in Wiltshire.[2] This village was next to Hannington, about two miles away.

Baptisms cannot be found for all children, but Anthony's will named their children (as Mary, Thomas, Elizabeth, Susannah, and Anthony) and the will of their son Anthony also named two sisters (Elizabeth and Susannah). Anthony and Mary had the following known children:

  1. Mary Savery was baptised on 17 Nov 1631 in Highworth.[3]
  2. Thomas Savery, son of Anthony, was buried on 7 Jan 1633 in Highworth.[4]
  3. Susannah Savery was possibly born in about 1636. She was named in both her father's and brother's wills and married Thomas Fowler.
  4. Anthony Savery was baptised on 10 Sep 1637 in Adbourne, Wiltshire.[5] Anthony married Alice Heath and was a baker.
  5. Elizabeth Savery was probably baptised on 9 Aug 1640 in Aldbourne.[6] She was named in her brother's will as Mrs. Weston.
  6. Thomas Savery, another son Thomas was born who was named in his father's will.

Anthony was buried on 2 January 1648 N. S. in Adbourne.[7] This was three days after he wrote his will.
