7. Anthony Thornton (son of Francis Thornton & Alice Savage) of St. Paul's Parish, Stafford County, was born in 1695, and died in 1757. He was a Justice of Stafford. He married Winifred, daughter and heiress of Col. Peter Presley of "Northumberland House," Northumberland County. Anthony Thornton's will is dated Jan. 3, 1757, and was proved Nov. 8, in Stafford. In it he names, "son Presley, son Francis, son Anthony, daughter Winifred Bernard a tract of land in Spottsylvania County; son Peter, wife Winifred."

Issue:

  • A. Presley Thornton of "Northumberland House," born 1721; died 1769.
  • B. Francis Thornton of "Society Hill," King George County, Justice of the Peace and Colonel of Militia; married Sarah Fitzhugh. He died in 1784.
  • C. Peter Thornton of "Rose Hill," Caroline County, married Ellen Bankhead.
  • D. Anthony Thornton, of whom presently.
  • E. Winifred Thornton, married Bernard.
  • F. Judith Presley Thornton, born Oct. 3, 1731; died June 19, 1757, and is buried at Port Royal. She married Thomas Buckner of "Mill Hill" and "Mount Pleasant," Caroline County, and left issue.

Will

  • 1748-1767 Stafford County, Virginia Will Book O; [Antient Press]; Page 331 In Name of God Amen I ANTHONY THORNTON of Stafford County being in perfect sense do make this my last will & Testament.
  • Imprimis I give to my Son PRESLY THORNTON the several Negroes he has in his possession to which I have a Title in right of my Wife with their several increases except Negro Grace & her children which I have before given and do now confirm to my son FRANCIS and his heirs forever. Item I give to my beloved Wife WINIFRED the Tract of land whereon I now live during her natural life, & after her decease to my Son Francis & his heirs.
  • Item I give to my Son ANTHONY THORNTON all the Land I have at the Mountains to hint and heirs. Item I give to my Daughter WINIFRED BERNARD a Tract of land on Nash run in Spotsylvania County containing 650 acres to her & her heirs of her body.
  • Item I give to my Son PETER THORNTON a Tract of land on Mattopony containing 13F3 acres to him and heirs forever with all the Negroes, Stock of cattle, Hogs, horses & all other things on the said Plantation I also give to my said Son Peter tern head of young Cattle from the Plantation I now live on together with Negroes Jacob Rachael Roger & Violett to him and heirs.
  • Item I give to my Wife Winnefred a Tract of low ground whereon WILLIAM CONNER now lives during her life & after her death to my Son Anthony and heirs.
  • Item I give to my said Wife Negroes James Sarah a Boy Billy & little Jeremy during her life and after her death to my Son Peter & heirs.
  • Item I give the rest of my Negroes not before disposed to my said Wife to be at her disposal, together with my Stocks of horses cattle hogs & sheep.
  • Item I give the rest of my Estate to be equally divided between my Wife and my Son Peter Thornton. My desire is that my Estate shall not be appraised. Lastly I appoint my said Son Peter Thornton Executor of this my last will & Testament .. 3rd January 1757. Anthony Thornton
