Antoine Babin (c. 1626-C. 1687) married Marie Mercier. They are the ancestors of all the Acadian and Cajun Babins.

Antoine Babin appears to have come from La Chausée, la Vienne, France, where there were Babins living, although no record has been found of Antoine himself. He arrived at Port-Royal, Nova Scotia, around 1661. He probably married Marie Mercier there around 1662, rather than coming from France as a couple, because her mother was also in Port Royal, which points to her having come to Acadia with her family, and not with her husband. [Bona Arsenault states in Histoire et Généalogie des Acadiens that he came with his wife, but doesn’t say why he thinks so.]

Antoine’s parents are not known. [Stephen White is the foremost authority on Acadien ancestors, and he gives no parents for Antoine Babin in his Dictionnaire Généalogique des Familles Acadiens.] Antoine was a laborer. He was probably born around 1626. [In the 1671 census, he said he was 45 and in the 1686 census, he said he was 55. It’s likely that, the younger he was, the more accurate he would be about his age.] He died at Port Royal between 1686 and 1688, according to the BIM (Declarations at Belle-Ile-en-Mer)].

Living descendants with the Babin surname are descended from two sons. All the descendants in the Gaspé region of Québec are descended from Charles. All the Cajuns in Louisiana are descended from Vincent. And the Babins of New Brunswick are descendants of either Charles or Vincent.

Early on in my genealogy, before I learned to make adequate notes, I found a source that lists ANTOINE BAJOLET, not Antoine Babin, as the husband of Marie Mercier. I will continue to check out this information, 5 Oct 2001. Note of 9 Nov 2008: Stephen A. White's Acadian Origins (pioneers) lists Antoine BABIN as the husband of Marie Mercier. He states they both came from France.

BIOGRAPHY: Antoine Babin lived in Port-Royal where he married Marie Mercier, d/o unknown Mercier and Françoise Gaudet [who married Daniel LeBlanc, abt 1650]. Abt 1662, their son Charles settled in Pisiguit following his marriage to Madeleine Richard about 1686. She was the d/o Michel Richard and Madeleine Blanchard. Two of their six sons are the ancestors of all of the Babin families of New Brunswick. René, the eldest, married Isabelle Boudrot, d/o Claude Boudrot and Marie Thériot, and they had a large family. Among their chidren, Pierre, born May 26, 1735 at Grand-Pré. He married Madeleine Bourque February 22, 1759. She was the d/o Jean Bourque and Marie Thériault. They settled at Menoudie where he died June 1790.

The Acadian Babin family stems from one man, Antoine Babin, who lived at Port-Royal (now Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia, Canada).≤ref name=sw94 />
He was born in France around 1626 or 1631.≤ref name=age />Around 1662 he married Marie Mercier, daughter of an unkown Mercier and Françoise Gaudet. According to the depositions of his descendants,Antoine came to Acadia from France with his wife.≤ref name=origins>[ http://www.acadian-home.org/acadian-origins.html White, Stephen A. Christophe Babin and Renee Rou appear in some family trees as Antoine's parents, but we are not aware of any sourcesthat support that.
