Belang in de Gemeenschap Antoine Crispell was een van de oorspronkelijke patenthouders van New Paltz en lid van de oorspronkelijke Duzine-regering. Zijn naam blijft aanwezig op Huguenot Street in Kingston/Hurley.

Duzine regering

In the context of New Paltz, the term “Duzine” refers to a unique historical institution that played a specific role in the governance of this community. Let’s delve into the fascinating history:

The Duzine of New Paltz:
The Duzine, sometimes spelled as “Dusine,” was not the primary village government in New Paltz, but it held a distinct purpose.
It consisted of twelve men, each representing one of the original patentees (founders) of New Paltz. These patentees were descendants of the French-speaking Walloons who settled in the area.
The Duzine’s primary responsibilities were to:
Apportion land: As New Paltz was founded on a jointly-owned land patent, the Duzine allocated land to individual families.
Protect boundaries: It safeguarded the boundaries of the Huguenot Street area, where the Huguenots resided.
Contrary to popular belief, the Duzine was not the village government. New Paltz had a separate government established according to English colonial law.

Antoine and Marie Crispell left for the New World on April 27, 1660 in De Vergulde Otter (The Gilded Otter). They landed at New Amsterdam in New Netherland. Many French Huguenots settled in this Protestant-led Dutch colony. First going to Esopus, now part of Kingston, NY, the Crispell family settled in nearby Hurley. On June 7, 1663, when the Indians destroyed the village, his wife and infant daughter (Marie-Magdalene) were captured with Antoine but they were soon released. The next year, the entire province was taken over by the English from Dutch rule.

Antoine - and, later, his sons and daughters - did quite well-farming, milling, and acquiring land. One property that Antoine bought, lived in, and later willed to daughter Jannetje, is now a charming restaurant and tavern in Kingston. The Hoffman House is so called because Jannetje married Nicholas Hoffman. The couple raised nine children in the house, including a daughter who married into another early immigrant family. This accounts for the Crispell connection with the Roosevelts. https://hoffmanhousetavern.com/hoffman-house-history/ History of the Hoffman House and photo
