About Anton Doenier

Anton Doenier Source: History of Buffalo and Pepin Counties, Wisconsin, Volume I Illustrated; compiled by Franklyn Curtiss-Wedge, published by H. C. Cooper, Jr. & Co., Winona, Minn. (1919) page 469 transcribed by Mary Saggio.

ANTON DOENIER, a representative farmer and stock raiser of Montana township, Buffalo county, residing in section 16, was born in Oak Valley, January 11, 1878, son of Joel and Annette (Ganz) Doenier. The parents were natives of Switzerland and came to the United States separately, settling in Waumandee, where Joel Doenier engaged in farming. He died in March, 1904. He and his wife had seven children: Christina, who married Anton Sharlau; Anna, who married Charles Schultz; Anton, subject of this memoir; Alvina, wife of Alex Foster; Casper, who married Nellie Koshney, and Emma, who is unmarried. By a previous marriage to Fred Beck the mother had three children : Fred, now deceased; Arnold, who married Johanna Grothan, and Louisa, who is single. Anton Doenier attended district school in Montana during the winter months until he was 18 years old, in the meanwhile assisting his father on the farm, in which work he was engaged until reaching the age of 25 years, when he married. He then rented the home farm and operated it under rental for several years, or until July 11, 1913, when it became his by purchase. It contains 338 acres, of which about 200 acres are cleared, the rest being in woodland and bluff. Mr. Doenier owns the largest barn in Montana township, which he built in 1914. It measures 136 by 35 feet, has a wing 32 by 18 feet, and is provided with a stone basement and cement floors. Its equipment, which is thoroughly modern, includes water, electric light and ventilating systems, steel stanchions, a litter carrier and milking machines. The farm house was rebuilt by Mr. Doenier in 1913 and is also equipped with electric light and water. Mr. Doenier is successfully engaged in general farming, making specialties of dairying and the raising of swine. He also has a large herd of sheep, raising from forty to fifty each year, and is part owner of a threshing outfit which is used only for threshing the grain of the several owners. The Garden Valley Creamery also numbers him among its shareholders. Mr. Doenier has never sought political advancement, but is now serving in his fourth term as treasurer of his school district. He was married July 30, 1903, to Ella Schaffner, who was born in Montana township, July 30, 1880, daughter of Jacob and Marguerite (Manz) Schaffner. Her father, who was born in Switzerland, came to America when 11 years old and was a farmer for many years in Montana township, retiring in 1904. He is still living, as also is his wife, who was born in the United States. They are now living retired at Independence, Treupealeau county, Wisconsin. They had five children, all daughters, namely: Kate, who married Will Christ; Ella, now Mrs. Doenier; Rose, who is Mrs. Hunt; Sarah, who married Reuben Coy, and Emma, who is the wife of Will Segerstrom. Mr. and Mrs. Doenier are the parents of two children: Lester Jacob, born June 9, 1904, and Lloyd Anton, born February 10, 1909, both of whom are attending district school.
