About Anton Haines

Anton Haines (Hoeness) was born April 1, 1798. He married Genevieve (Genofeva Woerz) on October 30, 1833. Genevieve was born October 3, 1810. Both of them were born in Horschwag, Germany, which at that time was then in the Principality of Hohenzollern. Anton died shipboard enroute to America in April or May, 1854. He was buried at sea. This information came from Robert W. Haines, son of Edward Anton Haines, youngest son of Anton who was shipboard at the time of death. Robert's father would have been about twelve years of age at the time.

After arrival in our country, Anton's widow, Genevieve, took her children, five in number, to central New York state. They settled in Herkimer, where it is known that she had acquaintances and possibly distant relatives. Her three oldest children were ages 16, 18 and 20 years. The family apparently stayed together a few years and are believed to have operated a small mercantile business. The two oldest sons, John and Christian, were most likely in a feed and grain trading operation. This business, due to the turmoil of the Civil War, became unprofitable. In the next few years Christian and John Haines came to Wisconsin. Christian in 1865 and John three years later. Their sister, Christina, came to Wisconsin in 1870. All three had married prior to coming West.

The other two children, Anton Edward (Edward Anton) and Maria Anna Haines, remained in New York state and both were married there. Edward operated a grocery store and bakery shop in Canastota, NY. The family had moved there after living in Herkimer a few years.
