About Christina (Haines) Cain
Christina Haines was the third child and oldest daughter of Anton Haines and Genofeva Woerz. She was born in Hohenzellern, Germany on October 31, 1837. Christina came to the United States with her mother, brothers, and sisters. The family settled at Herkimer, New York state.
Christina married George Cain Sr. in Canastota, New York within a year or so after her arrival in America. George was born January 27, 1827 in Germany. According to family records he had been on the same boat with the Haines family when they emigrated from Germany, although of this there is no confirmation. George was first a railroad worker and later a farmer in Wisconsin.
Christina and her husband came to Wisconsin after the Civil War and settled in Meyer Valley, Town of Arcadia. They farmed there until 1896 when they retired and moved to the Village of Arcadia. George passed away June 12, 1904. About two years after her husband's death Christina went to live with her daughter, Mary A. (Cain) Fugina. She lived with this family until her death on December 12, 1918. Christina was a very likeable and lovable person according to Connie Winers (daughter of Mary A. (Cain) Fugina), who was a young person in the home at that time. Christina and her husband are buried in Calvary Cemetery near Arcadia, WI.
It is of interest to note that George Cain Sr. had changed his name from KUHN to Cain when he came to America. It is also interesting to note that George was a half-brother of Elizabeth Kuntz who was the wife of John B. Haines (the brother of Christina Haines). Both of these points are a matter of record in Christina's German Bible which she brought with her from Germany.
