About Anton Philipp "Tony" Schlatt

Death (incl. birthday)

"Illinois Deaths and Stillbirths, 1916-1947," database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:N3H2-Y9N : 10 March 2018), Anton Schlatt, 18 Nov 1916; Public Board of Health, Archives, Springfield; FHL microfilm 1,852,285.

Year of marriage can not be in 1891, because his wife was born in 1878, would be too young

Anton Schlaadt was born in Bingen am Rhein to Georg Schlaadt and Christina Wambach. He was the oldest of five surviving siblings (one sister died as an infant). His parents owned a barge business on the Rhein River transporting fruit and other goods. His siblings were born along the river, and settled with family in Düsseldorf after Christina died young. Anton left home as a teenager, and settled in the truck farms of Blue Island outside Chicago. He made a very fortunate investment in the ham market, and earned enough money to bring his siblings Anna, Maggie, Peter, and Helen to America. He married French-Canadian immigrant Sophie R. Belanger on 11 October 1891. They had three children - Florence Schlatt Hemenway, Tony Jr, and a daughter Dora who died as a small child. In the USA, the family surname was spelled Schlatt. Family in Germany still spell the surname Schlaadt. Tony Schlatt died of a torn mitral valve and heart attack.
