About Anton Sternad

Death Certificate says: The informant to the death was John Sternard (sic) from Osceola (this means the eldest brother - Tone Strnad's comment!). Tony's cause of death was: by being struck by ? (possibly wood) at 6m ? no 13 shaft Calumet Hecla Mining Co on June 18, 1910, dying June 25, 1910. His Mother is Theresa Mauser, Father John Sternard, born in Austria. His length of residence in Michigan was 8 months and at the address of 38 Church was only 10 days. Margene Dionysiu comments: The Hecla mining company is still in business today. Michigan was rich in copper but the work was very dangerous. I believe that Louis and family moved to Butte Montana to obtain work in the Butte Copper mines. During the time frame that they arrived, the war of the copper kings was happening and our Butte companies were trying to drive the price of copper so low that the Michigan mines would shut down. Many miners arrived in Butte during that time period. Louis, however, was not cut out for the drudgery of mining. He bought land and turned to ranching. Maybe his decision was also a consequence of his young brother's death.

Houghton County Mine Inspector Report:

ACCIDENT NO. 40 — June 25, 1910 — Anton Strnod, No. 13 Shaft, C. & H. Mine.

Anton Strnod died in the hospital on this day from the effects of an injury received on the 15th day of June. At that time he was struck on the head by a rock causing fracture of the skull.

An inquest was held before Justice Fisher. The following witnesses testified concerning the accident:

Jos. Tappero: “I work at No. 13 with Anton Costa. The two Strnod brothers, trammers, came in about a quarter after twelve and filled the last car and said, “You miners have a couple of block holes to blast." We said we would blast them right away and we did so. I came in right after dinner. I heard the rock come down but did not know it caught anybody until I heard Louis call us to come, that his brother was hurt. We carried him up the shaft and then I asked my partner where the rock came from. He said he did not know, just heard it fall. After that, we got a staff and looked all over the hanging to see if there was a fresh place, but could find none. I do not know where it came from. It may have come from the foot. It may be that in blasting the block holes it was loosened and fell away."

Louis Strnod, brother to deceased: “I was working with my brother at the time of the accident. We had started to fill a car when the rock came away at the 6th level, No. 13 Shaft. I do not know where the rock came from. Heard it fall and thought it came from the hanging, but could not say. I was not more than two feet away from my brother. We came out to the shaft and he sat on my knee until the cage came. I did not see the rock that struck him, there was no large rock around there."

Verdict: "That, the said Anton Strnod came to his death on the 25th day of June, 1910, from the effects of an injury received on the 15th day of June, 1910, by being struck on the head by a rock at the 6th level, No. 13 Shaft of the Calumet & Hecla Mine."
