Already at the census of 1865 he had become fatherless and lived with his mother and two siblings at Nordnes in Bergen, in the house, which later was to be called Strangehagen 2.

10 years later, at the census in 1875, he worked as a baker while living in the house that later got the address Kong Oskars Gade 6. In the same building, the brother Theodor Julian Tønnesen lived with his family.
