Antone was a Papago (Tohono Oʼodham) man

Biography:
Antone, born c. 1871 (based on the calculation of death in 1912 at age 41) was a Papago Indian with unknown parents.

According to Carla Joinson in her book Vanished in Hiawatha, Antone was admitted to the Canton Asylum on July 29, 1905, and diagnosed with chronic dementia (Dementia is a general term for loss of memory, language, problem-solving and other thinking abilities that are severe enough to interfere with daily life.), later revised in 1910 to dementia praecox, hebephrenia (Dementia praecox is a former psychiatric diagnosis for a chronic psychotic disorder that usually begins in late teens or early adulthood. The term translates to "premature dementia" or "precocious madness". Hebephrenia was an 'idiopathic incurable dementia whose onset is in adolescence', and became the core of dementia praecox).

On February 17, 1934, Dr. L.L. Culp wrote to the Commissioner of Indian Affairs and advised that Antone had been admitted from the Sells Agency, Arizona, had died at the Canton Asylum on April 4, 1912, and had been buried in the Canton Hiawatha Cemetery in tier 4 plot 28. Presumably, this information is from Asylum records.

His profile is part of the The Canton Asylum One Place Study.
