by Ann Lehmkuhl:
Maria Pereira was married by special license in Jan 1882 to Antonio dos Santos de Encarnaedo[sic] (surname incorrectly transcribed - see sources)

Act No 7 of 1894 made registration of births compulsory.
In 1895, Antonio and Maria register the birth of a child:

No name is registered for this female child, but working from the dates of birth of Antonio's daughters, I have concluded that this could only relate to Mary/Maria Santos.
While Antonio is recorded as mixed on this document, he is recorded as European on his Form of Information of a Death.
Family history handed down from Joan (Correia) Mostert , while not correct in many specifics, reported that ancestors who first came to South Africa were recorded as other than European for a period due to some administrative error.
At the time of this document (1895) Antonio and Maria are recorded as having had 3 living sons, and 3 living daughters, prior to the child being registered, as well as one deceased daughter.
