Genetic Genealogy and the Origins of Kämäräinen
FM Ari Kolehmainen - presentation 7.8.2021 Rantasalmi family reunion (approx. 54 min)
Genetic research specified the stages of the Kämäräinen family -

The Finnish Kämäräinen come from the Rantasalmi-Savonlinna area

Based on the genetic research, Ari Kolehmainen, a researcher at the Past Traits company, has come to the conclusion that Kämäräinen in various parts of Finland are descended from inhabitants who already inhabited Southern Savonia before the 11th century. Surnames were not yet in use at that time. There has been a perception in the past that the ancestors of Kämäräinen had come to the Saimaa region from the Karelian isthmus in the village of Kämärvi near Vyborg. However, genetic research does not support this. Rather, members of the family would appear to have spread to the isthmus from Savo. The Savonlinna-Rantasalmi area has been inhabited for more than 2,500 years and the inhabitants have apparently arrived from the Volga area via the north. A large part of the families currently affecting the Savo-Kainuu region have moved north to South Savo.

According to the genetic research, relatives of Kämäräinen include Kinnuset, Immoset, Airaksis, Peksujefi, Torviset, Pesoset, Haloset, Widows, Sivoset and Laukkaset. The kinship dates back to surnames in the 1000s and 1200s. Pesoset, Haloset, Widows and Laukkaset have separated about 1000 AD, Sivoset about 1100 AD. The other families mentioned differed after 1200. The farthest to the west were the Crows of present-day Konnevesi.

From Rantasalmi to Kuusamo and Kiuruvesi in Ylä-Savo, the family has moved to both at the same time in the 13th and 13th centuries. The branches of both are thus as close as the people of Rantasalmi, ie the people of Kuusamo have not gone to the Northeast via Ylä-Savo but on their own route.

The Kämäräinen family assembly decided to continue genetic research

At the Rantasalmi family meeting (7.8.21), it was decided to continue the research based on genetic research together with Ari Kolehmainen. Further research will focus on the Joensuu / Tohmajärvi family branches.

DNA testing has brought a significant new tool to genealogists.

The Kämäräinen family association was interested in the possibilities of new methods, and paternal DNA samples have been taken from the Rantasalmi, Kiuruvesi and Kuusamo family branches. From the DNA result, it can be concluded that the roots of Kämäräinen were in the Rantasalmi region as early as the Middle Ages or at the end of the Iron Age, even before the birth of surnames. Also looking at the previous stages, the branch turns out to be a very old Savo line.

The haplogroup of Kämäräinen is clearly from Rantasalmi and the closest families to Kämäräinen are also from the same area. The result corresponds well to the documentary information based on which Kämäräinen's primary home is in Rantasalmi.

DNA tests, which have grown in popularity, bring a wide range of new information, but it is also important to know how it is utilized.

Father-line DNA testing is becoming more common in the use of family clubs and individual family enthusiasts

-A man always inherits the Y chromosome from his father, and it can be used to trace the father line to the “top”. Although the direct father line is only one of our lineages, it can be used to find out the exact history of settlement, the birth of families and the connections of family branches, Kolehmainen says.

Kolehmainen works as a professional genealogist at the Family and History Service's Traces of the Past - company. She specializes in the study of early family histories and genetic genealogy.
